- The challenge: Çemsan, a leading company specialized in turnkey plant design faced significant quality issues due to defects produced during manual welding, particularly costly when working with materials such as stainless steel.
- The solution: To overcome the challenges, Çemsan implemented 15 GoFa™ units, designed for millimetric welding precision and easy operation.
- The application: By implementing GoFa™ cobots, Çemsan automated welding stainless-steel parts, doubled the welding length, and nearly eliminated faults.
With a large portfolio of turnkey plants delivered across Turkey, Çemsan is recognized as one of the leading industrial supplier and builder of turnkey plants and tailor-made solutions dedicated to a wide range of production facilities including Food, pharmaceutical and petrochemical sectors.
The company faced major difficulties due to labor shortages and the extensive time required to train new welders. These challenges were further intensified by significant quality variations in manual welding, which consistently led to heavy grinding and rework to correct defects, ultimately reducing productivity and impacting overall manufacturing efficiency. By integrating GoFa™, they achieved a fourfold increase in efficiency, significantly optimizing their welding processes.
Çemsan selected ABB Robotics after experiencing its performance firsthand through on-site demos organized by the local ABB team. The company purchased 5 GoFa™ cobots to validate performance in real production. Based on the success of the first batch, they placed subsequent repeat orders of 10 units, bringing the total installed fleet to 15 cobots till date.
“GoFa™ has been a strategic driver of our transformation, enabling us to significantly increase production speed and quality. We have doubled our welding length and improved MIG, MAG, TIG, and laser welding processes.” Uğur Açıldı, Cemsan Production Manager
GoFa’s high positional accuracy and smooth motion control enable continuous, 360‑degree welds on complex components, significantly reducing post‑processing and ensuring premium visual and structural quality. Mobility has been redefined with GoFa’s handling capabilities. “Since we started working with this technology, the job is no longer physically demanding. Manually guiding the robot is now effortless: no more bringing the part to the robot because the robot goes to the part” says Fikri Vurmaz, Quality Control Manager at Cemsan.
GoFa’s small footprint and intuitive interface also make it incredibly easy to deploy on the factory floor. “We can position it wherever it’s needed without disrupting existing layouts, which makes the whole process even more efficient and flexible” Fikri adds.
“With several GoFas in the line, one can weld while the operator teaches another, which keeps the pace between parts extremely fast”, highlights Uğur.
Easy Tech device and Wizard have proven to be a crucial aspect for ease of use. Throughout the project, ABB Robotics provided practical training to help operators transition smoothly into running the GoFa™: “Our workers were able to learn how to use the arc‑welding cobot in a single day, and within two weeks they were fully proficient” says Uğur.
“Çemsan has been able to bring together MIG, TIG, and plasma cutting within a unified automated workflow thanks to GoFa™” says Cem Sahindokuyucu, ABB Robotics Cobot Sales Manager in Turkey. The cobots have also enhanced additional operations such as sanding and laser welding, further expanding the range of tasks that can be streamlined on the shop floor. This demonstrates the broader advantages customers can achieve when implementing automation solutions.
Leading engineering companies like Çemsan achieve substantial efficiency gains, cut labor costs, and reach new quality standards with ABB’s GoFa™ cobot, which continues to stand out for its precision, reliability, and adaptability. By elevating manufacturing processes and freeing people to focus on more value‑adding tasks, GoFa™ is helping accelerate the adoption of collaborative automation across diverse industrial sectors.
