ABB Expands EH3 Outdoor Enclosures and Introduces CombiLine MP Interior Fittings at Light + Building 2026

ABB Expands EH3 Outdoor Enclosures and Introduces CombiLine MP Interior Fittings at Light + Building 2026

  • Larger 1,310 mm EH3 outdoor enclosure option supports increased component density driven by electrification and renewable energy integration
  • CombiLine interior fitting system now available for mounting plate applications, extending 40 years of installation efficiency to outdoor enclosure configurations
  • New wire holder accessories manufactured from recycled plastics double cable capacity while reducing installation time

ABB is unveiling significant enhancements to its EH3 outdoor enclosure portfolio – GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) cabinets for energy distribution and cable management – alongside the new CombiLine interior fitting system at Light + Building 2026. The larger enclosure sizes and integrated mounting plate solution address the growing complexity of modern electrical infrastructure, as electrification, renewable energy integration and intelligent energy management increase both the number and size of components housed within outdoor enclosures.

Expanded Enclosure Capacity Addresses Evolving Infrastructure Requirements

ABB has introduced a new 1,310 mm height option for its EH3 outdoor enclosure series, complementing the existing 875 mm and 1,125 mm configurations. The larger enclosure option provides greater flexibility as electrical infrastructure evolves beyond traditional distribution requirements.

Outdoor enclosures are increasingly required to accommodate power distribution components, as well as metering devices, communication modules, and energy management systems within a single protected environment. Applications such as residential distribution networks, supermarket installations and solar-integrated parking facilities with electric vehicle charging require more space within the enclosure, as both the number and size of components continue to increase.

The EH3 series provides IP-rated protection suitable for demanding outdoor environments, featuring vandal-resistant locking mechanisms and sloped roof designs that prevent water and debris accumulation. The enclosures incorporate stable mounting points for busbars and are engineered to withstand exposure to sun, rain, and road salt.

CombiLine MP Extends Interior Fitting to Mounting Plate Applications

ABB has also introduced CombiLine MP, extending its established 40-year CombiLine interior fitting system to mounting plate applications commonly used in outdoor enclosures such as EH3. CombiLine MP utilizes a modular architecture based on EDF profiles, supporting meter, current transformer, and distribution applications up to 440 A. CombiLine MP combines lower and upper mounting elements that can be configured to suit specific application requirements, enabling structured component arrangements even in space-constrained installations.

Front cable entry through the lower mounting element simplifies installation, while an IP54-rated meter hood provides splash protection for both indoor and outdoor use. The modular design maintains accessibility for maintenance and future modifications.

Wire Holder Accessories Support Higher Cable Capacity

New wire holder accessories for the CombiLine system are manufactured from recycled plastics. The ED60G wire holder provides double the cable capacity compared to previous generations, accommodating the larger conductor sizes required by higher power applications. The component offers multiple mounting options – threaded or screwed installation, interior or rear mounting, vertical or horizontal orientation – providing flexibility across enclosure configurations.

The T-shaped wire holder ED45GT features a snap-in mounting mechanism on the rear of DIN rails, enabling both horizontal and vertical cable routing. This reduces cable crossings and routing distances, contributing to faster installation and improved enclosure organization.

Integrated System Approach

The combination of expanded EH3 enclosures and CombiLine MP mounting plate compatibility provides a coordinated solution for evolving electrical distribution requirements. As electrical infrastructure accommodates larger cables and additional protective and control devices, the need for physical space and installation efficiency has intensified.

At the same time, labor shortages in the electrical industry place greater emphasis on systems that reduce on-site installation time while maintaining flexibility and quality. The enhanced portfolio supports applications ranging from traditional utility distribution to emerging infrastructure including electrified transport networks and smart grid installations requiring local energy management.

Andrea Menti, Energy Distribution Business Line Leader within ABB’s Smart Buildings Division, said: “Electrical infrastructure is becoming more complex as new energy sources and technologies are integrated into applications. This is placing greater demands on outdoor enclosures and the way components are arranged inside them. By expanding our EH3 enclosure series and extending CombiLine to mounting plate applications, we are giving installers more room to work with and making it easier to accommodate higher component density.”

ABB will showcase the expanded EH3 portfolio and CombiLine MP system at Light + Building 2026 as part of its ‘Inside the Innovation’ experience, where visitors can see the solutions featured within life-scale residential and commercial building environments inspired by real-world installations.

Visitors can experience ABB’s Inside the Innovation at Light + Building 2026 from 8–13 March, in Booth B51, E51 in Hall 12.
