ABB adds Generative AI capabilities to ABB Ability™ Energy Management System to accelerate operational insights

  • ABB extends Industrial Knowledge Vault generative AI capabilities into Energy Management System
  • Users can query key energy performance data in natural language alongside established dashboards and reports
  • Designed for teams working to improve efficiency, reliability and compliance in complex industrial environments

ABB today announced it has integrated its generative AI solution, ABB Ability™ Industrial Knowledge Vault (IKV), with ABB Ability™ Energy Management System (EMS). The combined offering enables EMS users to access energy and sustainability insights through natural language interaction, to enhance dashboards, analytics and reporting capabilities already embedded in ABB’s energy management solution used across industries including mining, pulp and paper, metals and cement.

By bringing IKV’s copilot functionality into EMS, operators, energy managers and sustainability teams can ask questions directly about energy usage, emissions drivers, cost factors and equipment performance. This removes the need to navigate multiple dashboards, apply extensive filters, export data or compile reports manually. EMS Copilot supports faster interpretation of operational energy data, while retaining the transparency and rigor required for industrial decision-making.

This integration reflects the operational reality many industrial organizations now face, including escalating energy costs, increased complexity across assets and systems, and growing requirements for efficiency, reliability and sustainability reporting. In industries such as mining, pulp and paper, metals and cement, where energy can represent a significant portion of operating costs, faster access to performance insights can support timelier operational decisions.

ABB selected EMS to benefit from Industrial Knowledge Vault’s expanded capabilities due to its maturity and robust data model, which provides the structure needed to generate reliable, actionable insights from energy performance data.

“Industrial organizations are under increasing pressure to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and strengthen operational resilience,” said Sanjit Shewale, Global Head of Digital for ABB’s Process Industries division. “By integrating generative AI capabilities into our Energy Management System, we are empowering teams to access the insights they need for faster, more informed decisions, without adding complexity to day-to-day operations.”

Industrial Knowledge Vault was launched to help industrial organizations retain and safeguard critical expertise by capturing and structuring information into a centralized repository that can be accessed through natural language conversations. Industrial Knowledge Vault supports the creation of actionable procedures and step-by-step workflows to help workers apply best practices more efficiently and preserve safe operations.
