From Automation to Autonomous Operations: The Next Era for Pulp, Paper, & Fiber

The pulp, paper, and fiber industry is entering a critical new phase. For decades, automation has enhanced stability, safety, and productivity in mills around the world. However, today’s growing demands for sustainability, energy challenges, cost pressures, and workforce shortages are pushing operations beyond the capabilities of traditional automation.

To stay competitive in this changing environment, the industry is shifting toward autonomous operations—a major advancement in how mills operate, optimize, and adapt in real time.

Wilson Monteiro Jr., Global Business Line Manager for Pulp, Paper & Fiber at ABB, shared his insights on this important transition in an interview with CNBC Indonesia.

Unlike traditional automation, which relies on fixed rules and algorithms, autonomous operations combine automation with artificial intelligence (AI). This allows systems to learn from experience, interpret incomplete data, and make decisions beyond conventional limits.   The journey toward autonomy is gradual and requires a well-structured approach. Key steps include strengthening automation foundations, improving data integrity, enhancing cybersecurity, and progressively adopting AI-driven decision-making.
