Terwiesch is currently head of technology of Automation Technologies division - one of the group's two core businesses. He also heads the Process Automation business in Germany.
Terwiesch, 39, joined ABB as a scientist at the corporate research center in Dättwil, Switzerland in 1994. Among other positions in Switzerland and Germany, he has also been head of the Dättwil research center.
His appointment as chief technology officer takes effect on July 1, 2005. Terwiesch, a German national, studied electrical engineering at Karlsruhe University and received a PhD from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). Terwiesch is married with two children.

Terwiesch replaces Markus Bayegan, who is retiring after a distinguished career of 24 years with ABB. He held a series of research positions before becoming head of research and development and technology in 1998. He was appointed chief technology officer in 2001.
