April 28, 2017 – The Red Dot Award is the internationally organized competition, which appraises the best products of the year and was established in 1955. Manufacturers and designers from all over the world can submit originals of their latest products, which are tested, discussed and evaluated individually by an independent and international jury. Besides the design, the jury assess also innovation, formal quality, functionality, ergonomics, durability, intuitive nature and ecological compatibility, etc. This year, Red Dot received submissions from 54 countries. Proudly, ABB has won not just one, but two awards this year alone in the category of Product Design 2017.
The new Easy & Safe range of industrial plugs and sockets was awarded. The whole range got a new attractive and functional design and some technical improvements in 2016. Furthermore these industrial plugs and sockets have got IP67 classification, which guarantees water and dust tightness of electrical contacts. It brings reliability, reduces downtime and lowers maintenance costs. The contact parts of connectors are precisely manufactured from solid brass. The innovative design ensures contacts self-clean during connection and disconnection and keeps the contact area free from arcing.

The idea behind the design is to put the brand of ABB and what it stands for in the front seat. In addition, the new Indoor Video Station of the ABB-Welcome® door communication system was also presented with this internationally recognized award. Modern door communication has become indispensable for feeling safe. ABB´s new ABBWelcome® Indoor Video Station convinces not only with comfort, but also with the quality of its design.
With the upright 5” touch screen (12.6 cm), the ABB-Welcome® Indoor Video Station offers an optimal solution for including a lot of information and a full set of functions within a small area. This small device —only 99 millimeters wide— can be optionally mounted on the surface, or flush. With the well-established 2-wire bus technology, it is ideal for retrofitting and for new construction projects.
The range of functions is comprehensive despite the compact format. As the call at the door is made, photographs can be taken and saved in the picture storage. If no one is at home, three pictures of the visitor are saved automatically. Quickaccess buttons can be used to open the door, mute the sound and control the hallway light. The hearing-impaired will find the inductive coupling with the hearing aid to be particularly attractive and helpful. With this feature, the acoustic signals from the intercom are sent directly via the induction loops in the floor or in the walls into the hearing aid.
The ceremony for these prestigious Red Dot Awards - one of the most renowned design contests - will take place on 3 July in Essen, Germany.
