With ABB's assistance, over 289 children aged between 6-16 years attended the NSA regional school holiday program, which promotes health and wellbeing and includes educational games and activities. This includes physical games and activities to encourage active movement, as well as activities promoting diet, nutrition and lifestyle choices.
The Nyoongar Sports Association have been operating since and visits more than 18 regional towns during the April, July, October and January school holidays. The Program aims to provide a safe space where children can learn and socialise through a healthy, physical based structured program which includes a variety of games and physical sport-based activities. The Program is offered free of charge and is a stimulating alternative to children sitting around at home or engaging in anti-social behaviour.
"Being involved in the 2014 April School Holiday Program as the official Program Sponsor has demonstrated ABB’s commitment to making a difference to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal youth and tangibly demonstrates our commitment to good social and community citizenship, as well as our commitment to fulfilling our Reconciliation Action Plan strategy," said WA RAP champion Joe Russo.
NSA deliver Traditional Indigenous Games at every program as the games not only encourage physical movement and teamwork but also teach children about Aboriginal sports and their cultural heritage. All the programs included a healthy free lunch which the kids really enjoyed and always appreciate.
"The kids love the school holiday programs and we are always pleased to see the same faces coming back regularly,” said Mark Griffin, NSA program Manager. "Some of the kids have been attending the program for years and it is fantastic to see them develop and grow. In some we were even able to attract the parents to stay and get involved which is always encouraging!
The 2014 April School Holiday Program was a great success and we are most grateful to ABB for supporting our program as a sponsor."
