ABB’s compact and reliable ACH480 drive for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) offers a wide range of built-in features, including PID controllers, EMC filters, clocks, and timers to help keep costs down by reducing the need for additional components. The ACH480 drive can be connected with ABB Ability™, ABB’s unified, cross-industry, digital offering, which provides real-time data about drive status and performance from any location.

The uniform enclosure height and depth makes panel installation easy and integrates the drive well in most OEM equipment. The built-in energy optimizer feature and support for high efficiency motor types allow building owners and facility managers to maximize energy savings and increase return on investment.

Despite its small size, the ACH480 drive has complete functionality for controlling not only fans, pumps and compressors, but also more complex HVACR applications like air handling units or pump skids. The new drive is a panel mounting optimized version of the ACH580 and the shared common firmware, user interface and options make it easy to apply both drive series in one installation. In addition, the common protocols secure a seamless integration into any building management system (BMS). With the full range of options -- including BACnet/IP and numerous I/O configurations, as well as adaptive programming – the ACH480 can be customized to better match specific customer needs.

The intuitive control panel makes start-up, commissioning and operation effortless due to a full graphical display as well as HVAC-specific primary settings menu and help assistants. The optional Bluetooth® control panel enables wireless commissioning and monitoring, which is particularly relevant for the drives installed in hard-to-reach places.

“We have developed a drive that is optimized in size, without sacrificing any of the core controls functionality, which our HVACR drives are known for all over the world,” says Frank Taaning Grundholm, Vice President Global HVACR Sales.

To ensure reliability, the drives undergo comprehensive testing during production at nominal loads with maximum temperature. Protection against overvoltage, overcurrent and other emergency situations help prolong the life of the drives and motors too, saving the HVACR application from unexpected downtime.
