ABB has launched a full range of stainless steel IEC Food Safe motors and mounted ball bearings designed for the harsh washdown conditions in an industry where hygiene is critical. These new products are part of ABB’s Food Safe family that already includes Food Safe stainless steel NEMA motors and gearing. Food Safe products are particularly suited for the meat, poultry, fish and dairy industries where severe contamination can occur.

To reduce the risk of contamination and the amount of water and chemicals required to sanitize equipment all Food Safe products are easy to clean. The products feature smooth rounded housings to eliminate crevices that could trap food particles and harbor bacteria. Even the nameplates on the motors and gearing are laser etched to avoid channels and ridges where contaminants could accumulate.

Engineered with advanced sealing systems, the entire Food Safe family has achieved the IP69 water ingress protection rating – a benchmark for products used in hygiene areas. This classification means these products can withstand cleaning with high-pressure water jets commonly used in clean-in-place (CIP) procedures. The all stainless steel construction protects against corrosion.

“We understand that keeping food and drink safe is the highest priority for the food and beverage industry,” said Heikki Vepsalainen, Managing Director of ABB’s Motors and Generators business. “Our products help to maintain hygiene standards and are also designed to perform longer – improving plant reliability and reducing costs.”

IEC Food Safe motors feature encapsulated windings that last longer in harsh washdown conditions versus general purpose products. These motors also eliminate the need for motor shrouds, which can harbor food particles and allow bacteria to breed. IEC Food Safe motors feature IE3 premium efficiency to reduce energy consumption and emissions. They are available in the power range 0.18-7.5 kilowatts, in 2-6 pole versions for 230-690 volt at 50 or 60 hertz.

ABB’s Dodge® Food Safe mounted ball bearings are the first industrial bearings to achieve the IP69 water protection rating without the use of an end cover. They are also the only bearings to carry a warranty against failure due to water ingress. The bearings’ 100 percent stainless steel insert design combined with a revolutionary top coat, KleenTec, offers superior protection against corrosion. Food Safe bearings are available in a variety of housing styles in sizes from 20 mm (1/2 inch) up to 50 mm (1-15/16 inch).

With a complete Food Safe offering, ABB can serve both customers as well as equipment manufacturers in the food industry across the world, using either metric or imperial measurements.
