Delivering safe, smart and sustainable energy solutions

Delivering safe, smart and sustainable energy solutions

As the world becomes increasingly connected, secure and networked energy distribution is not just a luxury – it’s a necessity. And the companies that help write our future will need the most intelligent, sustainable energy distribution solutions to meet their customers’, and the world’s, demand.

Here at ABB, we’re working hard to drive industrial digitalization with our pioneering electrification solutions. Designed to improve overall performance, enhance sustainability and ensure safety, our intelligent energy distribution offering makes up the backbone of today’s smart vehicles, cities and industries – and is future-proofed for tomorrow.

Future of mobility and cities

The future of mobility is, and has to be, smarter – with clean, sustainable and low-noise mobility solutions driving industry standards. Knowing this, ABB is already developing and delivering the future-forward products powering this revolution.

Recently, ABB supplied its high-power 300P fast charging system to power the world’s first 12-meter fully electric autonomous bus in Singapore. With 300 kW DC power, the system can recharge a battery in three to six minutes, providing the flexibility and efficiency needed for Singapore to take an important step toward sustainable mobility.

Cities are also taking steps to become smarter and more sustainable. With a partnership with Swedish energy company Mälarenergi, ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operations is optimizing operational performance, reducing energy consumption and increasing efficiency in Västerås Sweden’s fifth largest urban area. In addition, ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operations, as part of our ABB Ability™ portfolio of digital solutions, connects the utility directly to ABB’s domain and technology experts, shortening time-to-resolution for operational issues and minimizing downtime.

Future of industry

ABB’s smart, safe solutions are also facilitating industrial change. A major utility plant on the Arabian Gulf upgraded outmoded trip units from competitor circuit breakers with Ekip UP, part of the ABB Ability™ offering, reducing costs by 50 percent while dramatically improving the facility’s capabilities. A cloud-connecting technology, Ekip UP digital units also improve power management and enable predictive maintenance of existing assets while keeping downtime to a minimum as a real plug&play solution.

For marine applications, ABB’s Emax 2/ML carries ships to higher levels of reliability. As the most compact circuit breaker on the market, Emax 2/ML reduces circuit box size by up to 30 percent, significantly decreasing overall weight while simultaneously providing enhanced safety and protection measures.

Future of energy

Whatever the application, safe and intelligent energy distribution sits at the core of solutions for today and tomorrow.

ABB’s leading-edge solid state circuit breaker concept promises to deliver the major advances in speed, safety and efficiency that next-generation renewables, microgrids and charging stations will need. Due to launch in 2020, the breaker uses power electronics and advanced software to achieve operation times that are 100 times faster than electro-mechanical devices. It also will meet the extreme durability demands of grid-edge power systems, providing millions of fault-free operations with zero servicing.

It will integrate effortlessly with ABB Ability™ Electrical Distribution Control System, which provides 100 percent monitoring of every final circuit, ensuring complete visibility and control, optimizing power usage and in turn, reducing CO2 emissions.

ABB’s new asset health solution ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring for switchgear - SWICOM optimizes switchgear using real-time information of the electrical system. The monitoring and diagnostics of the information is extracted from IEC 61850 based protection relays. This enables decrease of switchgear maintenance costs by up to 30 percent and prevents unexpected downtime by reducing failures throughout the power process.

Through our cloud infrastructure, a core element of our ABB Ability™ offering, data from the full electrical system can be accessed from anywhere, at any time, resulting in efficiencies such as up to 30 percent saving on operating costs and up to 40 percent reduction in maintenance costs.

The ABB offering for smarter energy distribution also includes solutions to enhance safety measures and improve security.

Working together, we can write the future of safe, smart and sustainable electrification.
