ABB and Dassault Systèmes showcase first robotics digital twin at Hannover Messe

The game-changing partnership transcends customer experience by provid-ing an end-to-end digital portfolio for increased flexibility, efficiency and productivity.

At Hannover Messe 2019, ABB and Dassault Systèmes will present for the first time a digital twin created with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform under their strategic partnership announced earlier this year. This global collaboration will create a portfolio of unique solutions ranging from product life cycle management to asset health solutions.

The partnership will allow customers to optimize their operations in a fully digital way including the design, build, operate and maintenance phases of operations.

The digital twin of an ABB spot welding application, involving a high-performance ABB IRB 6700 robot, will be on display at the Dassault Systèmes stand at Hannover Messe in Hall 6, Stand K30. It will demonstrate how operators can expand beyond cell and line level simulation, to include diverse factory-wide systems.

“By partnering with Dassault Systèmes, we will be able to take our customers beyond the robot cells and applications to seeing the full picture of their factory models and production lines,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics & Discrete Automation business. “Combining ABB’s high-performance robots and ABB Ability™ digital solutions with Dassault Systèmes’ intuitive software offers our customers greater engineering efficiency and increased design and manufacturing flexibility, allowing them to bring their products to the market faster and with the optimal balance of consistency, high quality and fast cycle times.”

“Our partnership with ABB focuses on maximizing customer value through collaboration spanning design to build and operate,” said Olivier Ribet, Executive Vice President, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Russia Geo Group, Dassault Systèmes.  “This digital twin robotics solution based on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform demonstrates how digital continuity across the value chain enables rapid product introduction, accelerates the shift from mass production to mass customization, and delivers early customer insights into new products, production lines, processes and operations, before physical assets are commissioned.  Industrial companies can experience how to connect value, achieve sustainable excellence, and transform their business.  They too can benefit from the platform phenomenon.”

As welding automotive parts has become more complex in recent years, designing production around the optimal robotics path is critical to increasing welding quality and productivity. The digital twin created with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform showcased at Hannover Messe 2019 will help event attendees comprehend the automation behind an actual automotive factory.

A digital twin created with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is the window to all aspects of production lines and manufacturing processes including intralogistics, building automation, quality and production -- all in one cohesive environment. It is one of the most important Industry technologies available today.

A digital twin created with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform offers clear benefits to highly automated industries. It allows new assembly processes to be put into production by linking together separate systems, such as logistics automation systems and the robots, so that parts are delivered precisely for optimal production performance.

It also provides insights before the first item has been produced and supports better decision-making through an enhanced understanding of what is happening on the production line. Providing customers with the ability to predict what will happen in the future is essential to maximizing Overall Equipment Effectiveness, manufacturing productivity and ultimately business profitability.

In February 2019, ABB and Dassault Systèmes announced a global partnership to offer customers in digital industries an end-to-end offering of advanced digital solutions, enhancing competitiveness of industrial companies, while increasing flexibility, speed and productivity of their products’ lifecycles, manufacturing and operations. The partnership will combine the strengths of ABB Ability™ and Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
