ABB affirms commitment to Canadian E-Mobility market with expanded EV charging infrastructure
August 3, 2017– ABB’s history in Québec goes back one hundred years. With its new Canadian headquarters and ABB North American Center of Excellence in E-Mobility in Montréal, ABB is strengthening its commitment to Canada as a major player in industrial systems of the future.
The Center of Excellence in E-Mobility, part of a $90 million investment in ABB’s new Campus Montréal, unveiled the installation of two Terra 53 DC electric vehicle charging stations during the Campus inauguration. Having the 50kW EV chargers is an initiative that not only supports the LEED® certification of the ABB building but helps to power a more sustainable Canadian future. They are free for use by all ABB employees and by campus visitors, and are fully compatible with all electric vehicles, enabling a driving range of 60 km (37.3 miles) with 15 minutes of charging (This calculation is based on a 50kW charger and assumes 5km of driving per kWh, which is true for normal passenger cars under normal driving conditions, ie not in winter, etc.)charging a car battery to 80 percent in as little as 15 minutes.
“The Center of Excellence in E-Mobility was created to share expertise with Canadian customers and stakeholders in the field of electric-powered transportation technologies,” said Nathalie Pilon, Country Managing Director, ABB Canada. “It will support the development of sustainable transport networks and will bring together transit operators, power utilities and engineering experts to address challenges related to building smart cities and energy efficient mobility solutions for Canada.”
ABB’s commitment to future-proof EV charging infrastructure is further demonstrated by its offering for the next generation of electric vehicles and ABB AbilityTM EV Charging solutions. With the imminent arrival of several EV models with larger batteries and longer range, DC fast chargers need to be more powerful. ABB’s high-power charger technology, rated up to 300 kW, is based on its proven e-bus modular charging system technology and is available today.
“ABB is dedicated to shaping and accelerating the transformation of mobility. Through our strong history of pioneering technology in this field and our comprehensive digital offering ABB AbilityTM, we are excited to drive progress together with our customers every day, from the Center of Excellence in E-Mobility in Montréal,” says Nathalie Pilon.
The ABB Ability EV Charging solutions allow customers to thrive with the Industrial Internet of Things by connecting thousands of chargers to the Microsoft Azure cloud-based platform. A 24/7 managed network operation center monitors the connectivity between the charger and the customers’ B2C platform. At its core, ABB Ability is about connecting customers’ business operations to the Industrial Internet of Things, driving greater value and efficiency.
With over 25 percent of emissions in Canada coming from transportation, electrification of the sector is a crucial feature of a more sustainable Canadian future, both for the environment and in fighting climate change. With a dedicated team of sales, service sales, application engineering, and fully-trained service personnel, ABB’s Center of Excellence in E-Mobility will put Canada on the map of emerging technologies that will power the change, and help make the nation a global hub for smarter, sustainable transport systems. Since 2010, ABB has sold approximately 5,000 EV fast chargers around the world.
