Phu Quoc, a beautiful island located in the south of Viet Nam, is an attractive tourism destination nationally and internationally; and potentially an important coastal economic zone under a decision issued by the Government.
However, the prospective future for the development of this island faced serious power issue. With a total capacity of only around 20MW generated from diesel, local needs had not been met and power outages happened from time to time. This incident significantly deterred the socio-economic growth of Phu Quoc.
In an effort to resolve this problem, Electricity Vietnam (EVN) decided to invest in a VND 2,336 billion project including 58km long 110kV submarine cable from Kien Giang province to Phu Quoc Island with a transmission capacity of 131 MVA and the two 110kV substations with a total capacity of 80MVA in order to supply power for Phu Quoc Island.
ABB in Vietnam got the order for supplying substation equipment to substations at the two ends of cable. Especially, Phu Quoc substation is equipped with 2x40MVA 110kV Power Transformer from ABB Hanoi transformer factory, 42MVAr 110kV Shunt Reactor from ABB Chongqing factory, High Voltage equipment from ABB India, Medium Voltage equipment from ABB Medium Voltage Factories in Vietnam & China, Control & Protection from ABB in Sweden & Finland, SCADA from ABB in Germany.
Despite the challenges of producing the first Shunt Reactor oil type in Vietnam market with a short delivery time, all required equipment was successfully handed over to Southern Power Corporation (SPC) at the end of September at Phu Quoc substation with participation from SPC, Southern Power Project Management board, Southern High Voltage Management Company and other Testing, Consultant & EPCs. All equipment was recorded at good status & quality, which proves the ability to withstand severe weather conditions on the island.
SPC and other companies' confidence in the quality and assurance ABB brings to the success of the project has been realized. Thanks to the early completion of the project, Phu Quoc residents and businesses have been supplied with a safe and stable power source earlier than expected.
