Another power grid giant deploys predictive maintenance software solution to hone critical assets

China Southern Power Grid (CSG), China’s second largest electricity grid company and which serves more than 250 million people, has selected ABB Ability™ Ellipse® Asset Performance Management (APM) solution to enhance operational efficiency and increase equipment longevity of its electrical grid. This predictive maintenance software solution will enable the tracking of real-time data based on the performance of transformers and other critical power assets, which can be meticulously analyzed to forecast asset continuity and renewal needs.

“ABB’s Ability Ellipse APM software integrates itself with CSG’s existing evaluation system, and besides enabling maintenance prioritization and asset renewal, helps in optimizing asset utilization, reducing maintenance expense and mitigating the risk of system disruptions and equipment failure,” says Massimo Danieli head of ABB’s Grid Automation business, within the company’s Power Grids business. “ABB Power Grids’ technology and software solutions are developed to enable a stronger, smarter and greener grid, which also goes hand in hand with CSG’s vision to build a smart, efficient, reliable, green and modern power grid for a direct and tangible benefit for millions of Chinese consumers.”

CSG owns electricity grids in China’s Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan provinces – a service area spanning one million square kilometers – the equivalent size of Egypt. The company also supports some of the power needs of neighboring countries like Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. With energy consumption expected to rise exponentially across Asia over the coming years, a reliable assessment of critical power assets becomes crucial. ABB helps in that key task by augmenting existing technology with smart solutions.
