ABB today launched the Terra 53 fast charger, the first of its kind charging solution for electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia, reducing charging time to 15 minutes. This development reflects ABB's vision to encourage a wider acceptance and adoption of sustainable mobility in support of Malaysia's pledge to reduce carbon emissions intensity of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 45% by 2030.
The Terra 53, which supports all current open charging standards, offers both AC and DC charging to deliver fast charging for EVs equipped with either power connection. With up to 44kW available using AC, and 50kW for DC, ABB's fast charging solutions will provide greater charging convenience, allowing EV users to charge up their cars faster.
Commending ABB on its breakthrough, Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia), Ir. Ahmad Hadri Haris said, "With land transportation representing one of the largest carbon emitters in the country, sustainable mobility must be the way forward. We are pleased that ABB, a pioneering global technology leader, has stepped forward to join GreenTech Malaysia's mission of accelerating the switch to electric vehicles."
"Under GreenTech Malaysia's Electric Mobility flagship, we have introduced ChargEV station, our very own brand of charging stations in 2015 and to date, have successfully deployed 150 stations across the nation. In this regard, we view the offering of a fast charging solution by ABB a complementary initiative towards our effort of strengthening Malaysia's EV ecosystem for the increasing number of EV drivers on the road," he added.
Malaysia targets to deploy 100,000 electric cars, 100,000 electric scooters and 2,000 electric buses by 2020, supported by 125,000 charging stations, to address the increasing carbon emissions generated by land transportation. The creation of a solid EV ecosystem will help to overcome range anxiety, which is one of the key concerns for drivers. As the national charging network expands, this will further encourage wider acceptance amongst Malaysians to consider sustainable mobility options.
The first Terra 53, which has been installed at ABB's office, currently utilises electricity from solar panels located at the roof of its office building, providing a 100% carbon neutral green mobility solution. This allows drivers to enjoy guilt-free green miles, at absolutely no cost.
