ABB Power World 2016, with the theme "Leading Technology-Smart Solutions", kicked off on November 2, 2016, in Beijing. At the 1,100-square-meter exhibition area, ABB displayed nearly 100 smart, efficient, safe and green power products and solutions, including power plant automation, digital substation, high-voltage DC transmission, renewable energy integration, energy management, cloud service, shore-to-ship, and smart home. These solutions are expected to meet the market demand of current and future power systems for power generation, transmission and distribution, and different fields of power utilization.
In the context of the global energy revolution and the fourth industrial revolution, digital technology, represented by the industrial Internet, has witnessed high-speed development and constant changes in market and customer demands. The development of distributed energy generation, renewable energy integration, power management, micro-grid, electric vehicle charging and other new fields and new technology is driving major reforms in the power system. As a global energy production and consumption giant, China proposed pushing energy revolution and building a clean, low-carbon, safe and effective modern energy system, in its 13th Five-year Plan.
"ABB is uniquely positioned to help China achieve the goals of the nation's 13th Five Year Plan - building a clean, low-carbon, safe and effective modern energy system - in the context of the global Energy and the Fourth Industrial Revolutions," said ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer. "We have a long and successful track record in China, which is one of our key markets. In addition, we have major manufacturing, R&D and engineering hubs in China and we remain committed to continue supporting China as a partner of choice in shaping a stronger, smarter and greener grid."
At ABB Power World 2016, the digital substation area has made its debut. As a key player in the future power system, digital substations adopt digital communications via fiber optic cables to replace traditional copper connections using analog signals, increasing safety, flexibility and availability, which reducing cost, risk and environmental impact. Building on the international standard for communication networks and systems for power automation IEC 61850, digital substations are equipped with disconnecting circuit breaker (DCB) with Fiber Optic Current Sensor (FOCS), smart MV switchgears and transformer e-devices, automation systems, and asset health centers. Many of these solutions have been applied to the new generation of intelligent substations in Fuping, Shaanxi Province.
On utility solutions, ABB set up five exhibition areas - intelligent application, intelligent power distribution network, intelligent power generation, new energy and ultra-high voltage, to fully display its comprehensive intelligent offerings which include smart grid, new energy power generation and integration, as well as leading power products as fiber optical current transformers (FOCT) and ultra-high voltage converter transformers. Among them, the highly flexible and extensible Symphony Plus control system can comprehensively integrate a plant's equipment, automation system, monitoring and data collection system, and operation and maintenance system. This provides plants with a safe and reliable control environment. ABB's HVDC transmission technology has been well applied to 26 HVDC transmission projects in China, including the world's first 1,100kv HVDC project Changji-Guquan line. This helps China bridge the need between power generation side and power consumption side via long-distance, large-capacity and low-loss power transmission, and build a stronger and more intelligent green grid.
On industry offerings, ABB set up digital solutions and power quality exhibition areas to display its leading power products, solutions and services in cloud service and asset management, medium-voltage power distribution network and low-voltage electrical application. It also shows how to make technical innovation and help industrial customers to realize their transformation and upgrading by using cloud computing and big data. For example, ABB cloud service, based on intelligent sensing, identification and communication technology, can achieve remote equipment interconnection, help customers realize remote equipment monitoring and management of equipment and create greater value through intelligent services. In addition, ABB's intelligent, low-voltage switchgear is designed with safe and reliable arc-proof design, and can help customers with motor protection, control, and optimized monitoring management.
On transport and infrastructure, ABB displays power solutions of rail and shore-to ship, cloud computing, wiring, and i-jia wireless smart home systems, to meet the demands of railway, marine, commercial building, data center and home applications. Ekip Smartvision, as an innovative cloud computing platform, can help users monitor, optimize and control electrical systems by using intelligent functions and connectivity of ABB's Emax2 circuit breaker, significantly increasing system reliability and improving up to 30% of energy efficiency. ABB's intelligent household experience area enables users to personally experience a wonderful and convenient smart home life through virtual reality technology, letting them feel the changes in life brought by science and technology.
This year coincides with the 125th anniversary of the founding of ABB's predecessor BBC. Over the past 125 years, ABB has been close to customers and markets with its leading technologies and provided customers along the power value chain with reliable and efficient green solutions and technical support. "ABB Power World" has become an important platform for ABB to showcase its latest technology and applications.
"ABB Power World", the largest customer event for ABB's power business in North Asia, was first held in China in 2011. This year, in addition to exhibitions, three industrial forums and over 60 technical seminars are held with such hot topics as energy interconnection, offshore wind power and rail. Meanwhile, participants get the chance to discuss how to support the Belt and Road Initiative in the areas of railway, highway, grid, oil and gas transmission, telecommunication and port.
