June 29, 2017 - ABB will supply ABB Ability™ iVD4®medium-voltage intelligent power distribution solution to the newly built 12-inch integrated circuit (IC) production line of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), ensuring reliable power for SMIC to deliver efficient chip production through digitilization.
ABB Ability, a range of connected and software-enabled solutions, enables customers to improve productivity through better insights and make operations and maintenance simpler.
SMIC is one of the leading IC chip foundries, and also the largest and most technologically sophisticated IC chip manufacturer in the mainland China. As the first of its kind in South China, SMIC's 12-inch IC production line that supports manufacturing of 45nm chips is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2017. The project will be delivered in two phases. The substation for Phase I, now under construction, will deploy the ABB Ability™ iVD4® MV intelligent power distribution solution, which includes 34 * 12 kV iVD4® circuit breakers, 4 isolation handcarts and online temperature measurement devices deployed for busbar and cables.
The customer selected ABB Ability™ iVD4® because the solution leverages digital technologies to guarantee high power reliability. The iVD4 online temperature measurement device can monitor the equipment operating temperature in real time, and the equipment operation & maintenance staff can not only monitor operation conditions locally, but also use their mobile APP to monitor the substation operating data and receive fault alarms remotely via the ABB service platform, identifying and eliminating potential hazards in a timely manner and reducing unexpected power outages and losses.
"We are very glad to work with SMIC on this project. Currently, ABB is proactively responding to the trend of increased integration of digital systems, network communication and large-scale data analysis into production. We leverage digital technologies to integrate our products, solutions and services, delivering real-time monitoring, remote control and predictive maintenance of power distribution systems to improve the productivity of the entire system." James Zhao, lead division manager of ABB Electrification Products in China, remarked.
