ABB supports industrial upgrade in central-western China with smart robotics technology

In line with the ambitions of the 13th Five-year Plan and Made in China 2025 strategy, ABB is demonstrating its leading industrial robot products and solutions at the International Automation and Robotics Show (IARS) in Wuhan from June 5 to 8, which is hailed as the "Top Exhibition of Smart Manufacturing in Central China". ABB showcased how the combination of robotics and digital technologies can help customers increase production efficiency, flexibility and reliability to build up a connected and collaborative smart factory.

Known as an indicator of the industry trend, IARS focuses on the industrial automation and robot-related technology and equipment. At this event, ABB, the world's leading robot manufacturer, features robotics applications in the fields of automobile manufacturing and human-robot collaboration with two highly popular demonstrations of the cutting, welding and inspecting production line as well as delighting visitors with a coffee served from its YuMi dual-arm collaborative robot.

The automobile industry has the widest application of industrial robots. ABB offers a leading portfolio of automotive manufacturing solutions for the entire production process including press automation, Body-In-White, painting, and powertrain assembly, as well as final trim and assembly. This also includes solutions for electrical vehicle manufacturing.

The cutting, welding & inspecting production line works with high precision paths, a simple but powerful programming framework, friendly Human-Machine Interfaces and a variety of cutting edge solutions like virtual comissioning and virtual/augmented reality which can help auto parts factories greatly increase production efficiency and enhance product quality.

ABB also has a unique 3D vision integrated inspection automation solution. This can quickly inspect every part on line in real-time, rather than relying on random statistical samples. The system is also capable of detecting mistakes that a human eye cannot see, even on dark or shiny components.

A highlight of the show is ABB's YuMi robot working as a barista with the help of vision guidance, lead-through programming and RobotStudio® software.

RobotStudio is ABB's advanced offline programming software that can help manufacturers design and commission new lines off-line, without disrupting the factory floor, while also training operators and optimizing processes. This helps launch new products faster, and with less surprises.

ABB is a pioneer in industrial robots, collaborative robots, as well as advanced digital services. By conducting remote monitoring and fast fault detection, ABB Ability™ Connected Service can help cut failure rate by as much as 20%, improve response speed by up to 60%, and prolong robot service life.
ABB was the first global manufacturer to have a complete value chain in China from R&D, production, sales, engineering, and system integration to services.

Upon the rising labor costs, overcapacity, and structural imbalances, robotics technology and ABB Ability™ digital solutions can help industrial companies improve productivity, enhance reliability and reduce cost, transforming towards a flexible, customized and intelligent production model.

IARS is first held in the city of Wuhan in Hubei Province. As a key province in Central China, Hubei is a national base of steel, automotive and equipment manufacturing industries as well as emerging industries like information technology. It is also home to abundant education resources and technical talents. In recent years, ABB has participated in many important projects in Hubei Province, such as the next-generation smart substations and several HVDC transmission lines, several metro lines in Wuhan, modern streetcars of Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone, Wuhan-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway, CCB Wuhan Disaster Backup and Recovery Center, Wuhan CSOT T3 project, SINOPEC project and WISCO Fangchenggang project, etc. In 2016, ABB held its Automation World event, the largest annual event, in Wuhan, exhibiting comprehensive automation products and solutions including industrial robots.

Wuhan is China's largest inland transport hub by river and land, and is an important node in the Yangtze Economic Zone and the Belt and Road initiative. Now, Wuhan is exploring three pilot areas - new industry cultivation, industrial innovation system construction, the deep integration of advanced manufacturing and the Internet. Combining traditionally competitive industries with emerging and future industries, Wuhan hopes to promote deep integration of advanced manufacturing and the internet to achieve a leap in intelligent manufacturing. Intelligent technologies represented by industrial robotics together with innovative digital technologies are important means to realize the transformation and upgrade of the manufacturing. ABB will continue leading technological innovation and help customers in central and western regions to drive productivity and efficiency to new levels.

The Industrial Automation and Robotics Show (IARS) is a branch of the China International Industry Fair. The show will display IAS and RS, making two most dominant automation exhibitions in Wuhan. Integrating the development characteristics featuring China's midwest cities, it aims to build an "elite show" that is focused on the technology and equipment relating to automation and robotics, and takes the first step toward brand output conducted by the China International Industry Fair in China's midwest cities. It also lays the foundation and sets the standard in the industry for becoming the leading show with cutting-edge technology, maximum scale and impact on China's midwest cities.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a pioneering technology leader in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB today is writing the future of industrial digitalization with two clear value propositions: bringing electricity from any power plant to any plug and automating industries from natural resources to finished products. As title partner of Formula E, the fully electric international FIA motorsport class, ABB is pushing the boundaries of e-mobility to contribute to a sustainable future. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 135,000 employees.
