China leads the global wind energy market, with 23.3 GW of capacity installed in 2016, totaling 169 GW total capacity (just over a third of the world's overall), according to industry experts. The government's energy agency plans to spend approximately $360 billion on renewable energy by 2020.
ABB's newest ACS800 wind converters for DFIG (doubly fed induction generators) provide a vital connection that moderates turbine speed and electrical current when wind speeds change. This makes it possible to better integrate supplying wind power to power grids, while reducing the wear on turbines.
The advanced model was produced at ABB Drives China Research and Development Center, in collaboration with ABB's global expertise in power generation and automation, according to Tao Xiao, the project's manager. The ACS800 line is fully compatible with interfaces built for prior designs.
"ABB Beijing Drive Systems Co., Ltd. has manufactured industrial drives since 1997, and wind converters since 2007," said Bill-Jie Hu, Manager of ABB's wind converter business in China. "We support wind power development in China with converters for all power ratings, low and medium voltage converters, solutions for DFIG and full power configurations, and now a next gen model that looks to the year 2020 and beyond."
"We're pleased to support China's renewable power goals," added Morgan-LianHe Liu, Profit Center Manager for ABB's Chinese wind converter business. "This latest technical innovation makes us even better equipped to meet the needs of both domestic and export markets, and we are investing in continued development to further advance our leadership.".
