Life cycle services allow industry partners and customers to achieve efficient development
Beijing, June 23, 2010 -ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, showcased its advanced wind power technologies and solutions at Wind Power Asia 2010. ABB also tabbed the event for the global debut of its new standard series of slip ring generators.
Jari Tukia, head of Wind Power Industry Sector of ABB North Asia, said, "ABB is the largest global supplier of electrical components for wind turbines as well as leading supplier for connecting power to grid. With our advanced products and optimal services, we support turbine manufacturers, wind power plant operators and other industry partners so that they can develop wind power in a reliable and efficient way. The development and use of the renewable energies such as wind power are integral steps in the sustainable economic growth of China. We have contributed to many local wind power projects with our leading technology, products and services."
As one of the highlights of Wind Power Asia, ABB is introducing a new standard series of slip ring generators to fit most 1.5 - 2.0 MW doubly-fed turbines. Featuring a module design, the new product is suitable to most turbines used today as well as to all kinds of land based and off-shore wind farm. With a patented rotor design, it can withstand overspeed and voltage peaks, and reaches an increased insulation level at 2.5 kV and a maximum overspeed up to 3,000 revolutions per minute. The product, maintaining a leading position in terms of both technology and performance in the global market, will be introduced for local production in China soon after its release.
ABB also uses the event to highlight its leading wind power products and solutions, including wind generators, converters, air circuit breakers, and contactors. Wind turbine is the core mechanic component in the wind power system, and is composed of a variety of subsystems. ABB supplies electrical products for all wind power subsystems, including the electrical drivetrain system, the grid connection system, the turbine control and protection system, the pitch and yaw systems, the electrical protection and disconnection system, lighting protection, the hydraulic and cooling system, and auxiliary systems. The electrical drivetrain acts as the core electrical system in the wind turbine. ABB electrical drivetrain packages consist of generators and converters for both the doubly-fed and high, medium and low-speed full converter systems. ABB's programmable logic controller (PLC) controls and protects the entire wind turbine system, ensuring the wind turbines operate with both accuracy and efficiency. ABB's full range of low voltage products is widely deployed in all subsystems of the wind turbine.
ABB's service business also enjoys the same leading position in the wind power sector. The company offers a full spectrum of tailored life cycle services, including pre-purchase engineering, installation and commissioning, technical support, online and classroom training, preventive maintenance, spare part kits, retrofitting, and refurbishment, helping customers to operate at optimum levels. Supported by regional service hubs, ABB services are available globally to promptly respond to customer demands.
ABB has actively participated in a number of large-scale wind projects in China with its advanced technology, such as providing converters to the "Three Gorges Wind Power Project" in Jiuquan, Gansu province, the Jiangsu coastal Wind Farm, the East Inner Mongolia Wind Farm, and the Zhangbei Wind Farm. The company also provided gas insulated switchgears (GIS) and motors to China's first offshore wind farm at Shanghai Donghai Bridge, and compact substations with distribution transformers and ring main units to the Jiangsu Rudong Wind Farm. In 2009, growth of ABB's wind power business in China exceeded the market growth.
