ABB cooperates with Beijing Jiaotong University to setup Electrified Railway Training Center

ABB promotes professional training and the sharing of advanced technology in China's high-speed railway sector

Beijing, January 13, 2010 -ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently announced its cooperation with Beijing Jiaotong University to set up the ABB Electrified Railway Training Center. The training facility, with advanced railway traction power equipment donated by ABB, will provide teaching, scientific research and training activities for the technical personnel of the Ministry of Railways and the teachers and students of the university. The effort will contribute to talent development in China's high-speed electrified railway sector as well as support the overall development of the industry.

Pierre Comptdaer, vice president of ABB China, said at the signing ceremony, "ABB actively supports the development of education in China and closely cooperates with a number of nationwide universities. Working with the country's leading universities not only bolsters innovation at ABB, but also helps to cultivate new talent for the development of many industries. ABB is a global leader in the railway and metro sectors, while Beijing Jiaotong University is famous for its innovations in railway technology. The partnership between the two technical giants provides another successful example of the school-enterprise cooperation model."

Chen Feng, vice president of Beijing Jiaotong University, said: "The cooperation on the electrified railway training center is of great significance. It promotes vocational training, while improving our ability to conduct leading edge research. The training center will allow us to jointly cultivate high-end talent possessing both professional knowledge and practical application experience to support the rapid development of China's railway construction."

According to the agreement, ABB will donate advanced railway traction power equipment valued at over one million RMB, including gas-insulated switchgears, vacuum circuit breakers, insulated ring main units and models of box-type substation specially designed for railway use. In addition, ABB's senior technicians will also provide training on a regular basis at the center. After its establishment, the center will serve as the university's Engineering Research Center of the Electric Traction Education Department, providing vocational training for middle-and-high-ranking technicians, management and teaching staff from the Ministry of Railways.

The teaching and training at the new center will cover a variety of topics including electrical power engineering, electrical traction, and contact line systems. Compared with traditional methods, the new center will provide practical training with career-oriented content enabled by ABB's advanced equipment. The center will help technicians quickly master the new technology on the power supply of high-speed railway and the field operation skill of latest equipment. The center will also organize exchange activities to regularly share leading rail technology, providing an ideal learning and interaction platform for the staff of the Ministry of Railways and university teachers and students in relevant fields.
