At the Global Future Mobility Conference 2018 (GFM 2018) unveiled in Hangzhou today, Dr. Chunyuan Gu, President of the ABB Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) region, delivered a speech themed "E-mobility Driving into the Future". Experts from global top-level think-tanks, industrial giants, government, academic circle and research institutions shared insights on future e-mobility and smart mobility trends in the context of industrial revolution, and discussed cross-discipline integration of technologies and innovative business models.
According to Dr. Gu, the global automobile industry will embrace an unprecedentedly paradigm-shifting change with a vigorous promotion of the energy revolution and the fourth industrial revolution. The enablers behind this change comes from the cross-discipline integration of technical innovations in the fields of green energy, smart grid, IT and mobile internet, inject new energy into the booming development of EV industry.
To make EVs a truly sustainable means of transportation, renewable energy must be utilized effectively. The combination of solar power and EV will be an important feature of the future energy system. The green charging ecosystem that integrates solar power generation, large capacity energy storage and intelligent charging stations can effectively address the challenges of fluctuation and intermittency in renewable energy, and continuously provide clean energy for EVs. Meanwhile, as distributed energy storage facilities, EVs can not only combine with distributed energy and renewable energy systems to create micro-grid systems, but also respond to and flexibly adjust power demands for real-time charging and discharging, thus enabling two-way interactions with power grids.
EV is not just about substituting for fuels with electricity, and its more profound significance lies in integration of IT, networks and intelligent technologies, as well as the innovations and breakthroughs in such technologies as big data, cloud computing and AI. In the eyes of Dr. Gu, it is technical innovation that drives the birth of the new Internet of Vehicles (IoV) ecosystem. We should also focus more on intelligent charging while widely talking about intelligent driving, for automobiles and charging stations both will become intelligent terminals of the future transportation system, and get connected with users and service providers.
For instance, with the ABB Ability™ Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) solution, the highly reliable and secure ABB cloud platform can be leveraged to enable active condition monitoring, remote software update and troubleshooting, rapid response to demands, improved service efficiency and lowered operation & maintenance costs. At the same time, it can integrate APIs and internet tools to help vehicle owners flexibly configure their charging pile and remotely monitor the charging state. As a global technology leader in DC fast charging field, ABB has installed a total of over 7,000 fast charging stations across the world currently, and all of them have been already connected.
As new carmakers vigorously grow and traditional vehicle manufacturers embark on their transformation, intelligent manufacturing becomes an inevitable trend, and industrial robots that provide automated and flexible manufacturing advantages play a highly visible role in EV manufacturing. Take NIO for example, ABB provides industrial robots to equip its welding production line, which ensures high vehicle performance and electric safety technology while improving productivity and product quality.
China has the world's largest number of EV users, and is also one of the few countries that have announced gradual elimination of fossil fuel vehicles. "China has become the most important power to influence and drive this historic change. As a large number of new EVs are introduced in market, China is faced with many new challenges, including improvement of charging infrastructure, integration with smart grid, and deployment of IT. As a global technology leader, ABB is able to provide a full range of ABB AbilityTM digital solutions from grid connection of renewable energy, large capacity energy storage, intelligent power distribution to fast charging, supporting China in building a future-oriented and sustainable transportation system and leading changes in global future mobility." Said Dr. Gu.
