Beijing, May 23, 2013 -- ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today, showcased its full range of innovative technologies and solutions in automation industries, including electrical vehicle charging stocks and solutions, high efficient motors, smart home solutions, robotic products and solutions, in its two-day annual event "ABB Automation World" under the theme of "Innovative Technologies Improve Productivity".

Greg Scheu, head of Marketing and Customer Solutions of ABB Group said, "As a global leader in automation and power, ABB has a strong commitment to China. Our comprehensive offerings for China's needs are made possible by fast-growing local R&D efforts. We are committed to continued investments into local R&D, sales, service and manufacturing, which will raise customer satisfactions to an unprecedented level."

Earlier this year, ABB launched Emax 2, the world's first low-voltage circuit breaker with integrated energy management functions. Replacing existing traditional breakers with the Emax 2 breakers has the potential to achieve annual savings of 5.8 million megawatt-hours (MWh). This is the equivalent electric consumption of 2.1 million Chinese families per year. This innovative product can also efficiently avoid blackouts at peak consumption.

To improve industrial energy efficiency, ABB offers a wide range of drives to control different types of motors as well as flexible connectivity to automation networks. All-compatible ACS880 displayed at the show is a good example in this respect. The ACS880 drives modules are built on an all-compatible drives architecture designed to provide customers across industries and applications with high level of compatibility, flexibility and ease of use.

ABB pioneered HVDC technology nearly 60 years ago and today still leads all the way by developing the world's first circuit breaker for high voltage direct current (HVDC) which was recently placed by MIT Technology Review among the 10 most important technology milestones of the past year. This technology breakthrough in 2012 solved a 100-year-old electrical engineering puzzle and paved the way for a new generation of highly efficient and reliable power transmission grids.

In addition to its leading position in long distance HVDC power transmission, ABB also applies its DC technology to medium- and low-voltage applications in electric vehicle charging, power distribution systems on ships, in building and in data centers. In data centers, ABB is able to provide a full range of DC technology for data centers to ensure increased energy efficiency of up to 20%, reduced space from 10 to 25%, lower installation and maintenance costs up to 30% and significantly improve power reliability. Estonia is the first country in the world to set up an e-vehicle charging network nationwide, with ABB's help to install 165 fast charging stations along the country's express ways and in urban areas. It takes 15-30 minutes to charge a car, comparing 8 hours in traditional way.

The first vessel to feature ABB's Onboard DC Grid was delivered to Norwegian offshore in April this year. The innovative technology help the vessel reduce space & weight by 30% while increasing ship payload capacity, and improve energy efficient up to 20%. ABB's Onboard DC Grid represents a breakthrough for the maritime industry in optimized propulsion by distributing power through a single DC circuit providing significant power savings. The technology has received a Spotlight on New Technology Award at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) which was held in Houston in May.

ABB sees innovation as a key for its sustained competiveness in the market. In 2012, ABB invested $1.5 billion in research and development which means 68% up since 2007 and the R&D spend of total revenue will be continuously lifted to 4% by 2015. Now, ABB has corporate labs in 7 countries including China and more than 8,000 scientists and engineers worldwide. Moreover, ABB keeps in collaboration with 70 leading research institutes and universities on various researching projects. In 2013, ABB launched a series of projects, aiming at delivering long-term, disruptive technologies, including significant cost reduction, performance increase, or a totally new functionality or product.

In China, ABB has also made great achievements in technology innovation by introducing a series of new products including new robots of the door opener and welding robots, Welcome all-digital door entry system, Winmation DCS system, TEC ST Smart Transformer for smart grid and new switchgears.

"ABB Automation World 2013" invites around 3,000 customers to hold discussions on sustainable development. This event has been successfully held for 5 consecutive years in Shanghai and Beijing with themes of "Innovation and Resource Efficiency," "Smart Technologies and Energy Efficiency," "Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy" and "Industrial Upgrade and Service" respectively.
