ABB M3BP Series motors awarded National Certificate for Energy Conservation

ABB performance motors aid Chinese industries in improving energy efficiency

Beijing, January 25, 2010 -ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has announced its locally produced ABB M3BP Series Three-phase Asynchronous Motors obtained the National Energy Conservation Product Certification issued by the China Quality Certification Center (CQC). The advanced motors, manufactured by ABB Shanghai Motors, are among ABB's latest performance offerings in China. They improve productivity while achieving energy efficiency, helping industrial customers to realize their goals for energy conservation and emissions reduction.

Robert Larsson, head of the ABB Discrete Automation and Motion division of ABB North Asia Region and ABB China, said, "As a pioneer in the market, energy efficiency is one of ABB's core values, which we put into the design and manufacture of each one of our products. M3BP is the latest star of the ABB energy efficiency product family. The series offers outstanding energy performance during its entire life cycle, creating both economic and environmental benefits for our customers. ABB motors have been deployed in many key industrial projects across China, supporting the sustainable development of China's economy."

ABB Shanghai Motors utilized leading European technology in the design and production of the M3BP motors and they are shipped to both the domestic and global market. The M3BP Series, with its high efficiency and reliability, is ideal for the process industry, with its strong demand for performance motors. They meet the marine industry's demand for motors with heavy load operation ability under the toughest conditions, and the requirements of the paper and metal industries for motors with both a high sustaining capacity and high operating accuracy.

High efficiency motors can bring huge energy savings opportunities to the industrial sector. Research shows that electric motors account for 60-65% of total industrial power consumption. Upgrading every inefficient motor in China could reduce power consumption by 19 billion kWh, equivalent to the total annual consumption needs of all households in Beijing and Shanghai and also around 18.9 million tons of CO2 emissions. The ABB M3BP Series motor fulfils both the EFF1- European Commission's highest efficiency value as well as the IE2 efficiency class requirements of the International Engineering Consortium (IEC). Classified as class-2 standard efficient motors as advocated by the Chinese government, they offer 2 to 3 percentage points of higher efficiency than the IE1 class motors commonly adopted in China. The M3BP Series motor will help customers lower operational costs while reducing carbon emissions.

A motor's initial investment accounts for only 2% of its total life cycle cost, while the rest goes to energy costs. Compared with other motors, the ABB M3BP motors have outstanding life cycle cost advantages, helping customers benefit from energy cost savings while shortening the time it takes to recoup the investment to less than 3 years.

ABB M3BP motors have been widely deployed in the marine, paper, mining, power plant, port, metal and water treatment sectors, in support of improved energy efficiency and alleviating energy shortages. In China, M3BP motors have been installed by a significant number of key industrial customers, including Anhui Shanying Paper Industry, Hengan Paper (Fujian), Jiangsu Shagang Group, the Pit-mouth Power Plant of Haibowan Mining Company of Shenhua Group, and Haichang Wharf of Dongguan.

The Anhui Shanying Paper Industry installed ABB M3BP motors in their Paper Machine Driving System, saving 1.5 million kWh of electricity and about RMB one million annually. In addition, the M3BP motors, with their high reliability and a designed service life of up to 30 years, ensure stable long-term performance for customers with reduced maintenance costs.

The China Quality Certification Center (CQC) is a state level certificate body with the approval of the Office of the Central Institutional Organization Commission of China and was established by the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The center, under the China Certification & Inspection Group, focuses on providing certificate service in the energy conservation, water conservation and environmental protection sectors in order to promote the adoption of energy efficiency products and drive the development of energy conservation technology.

During the certification process, ABB M3BP series motors all passed the sampling inspection and testing in 75 specifications conducted by Shanghai Testing & Inspection Institute for Electrical Equipment as authorized by CQC. In November 2009, ABB Shanghai Motors was subjected to a thorough onsite examination from CQC and passed the stringent inspection covering all processes including design, material purchasing, production, inspection and testing.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 120,000 people.
