Shanghai, December 1, 2015 - ABB, the world's leading power and automation technology group, today showcased its leading technologies in the marine and port field at the 2015 All China Marine Conference & Exhibition (Marintec China 2015) in Shanghai. A series of high-efficiency and energy-saving power and automation solutions were displayed, such as the marine electric propulsion system, turbocharging system, integrated automation system, marine engine waste heat recovery system, shore-to-ship power supply system, marine power supply and distribution system as well as ABB's measuring instruments and meters, motors and generators. With these leading technologies and products, ABB has actively supported the development of the Chinese shipbuilding and marine engineering equipment industries.

In May 2015, the State Council announced "Made in China 2025", a strategy to improve the competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry, and listed "marine engineering equipment and high-tech ships" as one of the ten key development sectors to promote China's shipbuilding industry towards a world-leading position. The "Belt and Road" initiative advocated by the Chinese government, especially the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" concept, has also brought new development opportunities for shipping, port and other maritime industries.

Jiang Haibo, Head of Process Automation Division, ABB China, said: "As Chinese government pushes forward the strategy to greatly improve the competitiveness of marine industry, China's shipbuilding industry has experienced rapid development in the past years. Upholding the 'In China, for China" strategy, ABB keeps enhancing the localization of its marine and ports businesses from R&D, manufacturing to engineering and services. In close cooperation with local industry partners and customers, ABB has been actively contributing to the shift of China's shipbuilding industry from big to strong."

In the field of marine and ports, ABB has many energy-efficient products, technologies and solutions. For example, ABB's onboard DC grid technology can help vessels save fuel by up to 27%, significantly lower noises and reduce the space and weight of electrical equipment by 30%. The ABB marine engine waste heat recovery system with a high-performance turbocharging unit can save the energy consumption of an engine by 10% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through access to the onshore power grid, ABB's shore-to-ship power supply system can allow commercial ships berthing at ports to close their internal combustion engines, resulting in a substantial reduction in port air and noise pollution.

As a leading global power propulsion system supplier, ABB established the ABB marine propulsion system global production base in Lingang District, Shanghai, in early 2011, in order to promote the efficient and environmentally-friendly power propulsion system to replace the internal combustion engine propulsion system in the actual application. The latest Azipod® D thruster launched by ABB this year is produced here - it uses the new hybrid cooling system and can improve the performance of the motor by 45%, thereby reducing the installed power by about 25% and helping users achieve energy saving in a large scale.

By controlling the speed and torque of the motor, transmission products can save energy by 30%-50%, which is of great significance to the energy saving and environmental protection of ships. At Marintec China 2015, ABB exhibited the ACS800 series water-cooled drive, which is characterized by compact design and low noise and can achieve fast, accurate control and reliable, efficient marine application. After using ACS800 multi-drive, the "Century Legend" luxury cruise ship running in the Yangtze River can reduce vibrations and noises by 80%. Calculated on a full load, the ship can save 200~400 metric tons of diesel oil a year.

The turbocharging system enables the fuel to fully combust by injecting more air into the engine, thus increasing the output power of the engine significantly and reducing fuel consumption and emissions. ABB also displayed its new-generation two-stage turbocharging system Power 2® and the latest single-stage turbocharging system at Marintec. The Power® 2800 M turbocharging system, whose efficiency reaches beyond 75%, can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 60%. A single set of such a system can save fuel costs by hundreds of thousands yuan each year. In order to reduce the noise generated by the compressed air, ABB has launched its first air compressor outlet noise reduction device, which can halve the noise level in the cabin, thus greatly improving the crew's working environment.

Effectively integrating the different systems and equipment on the ship and monitoring them in real-time can make the operation and management of the ships safer and more efficient. The ABB 800xA automation system, which has been operating around the world, has real-time gathering, uploading and data analysis functions and can make various systems and equipment of the ship connect seamlessly and carry out the real-time monitoring, analysis and remote management through a user interface. This improves the visualization of the propulsion system, power distribution system and cargo monitoring system of the ship and reduces maintenance costs, achieving more secure and efficient maritime transport and engineering operations.

Marintec China 2015 is the 18th All China Marine Conference & Exhibition and is expected to attract more than 2,000 exhibitors and more than 60,000 professional visitors. Its exhibition area will exceed 80,000 square meters, the largest ever. In addition, the number of national and regional pavilions in the exhibition has increased to 17. As shipping powers, Greece and Panama will send delegations for the first time to participate in Marintec China 2015.
