ABB supports safe and reliable operation of Asia’s largest data center

Provides all low-voltage switchgear to phase I of GDS’s data center substation in Shanghai Waigaoqiao
ABB products deployed within many of China’s key data center projects

Shanghai, March 12, 2012 - ABB has supported the phase I construction of the largest data center in Asia by providing all 137 MNS3.0 low-voltage switchgear units to its substation, thereby ensuring continuous safe and reliable operation. The recently completed data center is owned by GDS .

Poh Cheng Gay, head of the Low Voltage Products division, ABB North Asia and China, said, "As a leading company in the global data center industry, ABB boasts advanced technology, rich expertise and a wide product portfolio. ABB has participated in many data center projects in China. In this instance, ABB switchgears, breakers and other products were deployed in Asia's largest data center, recognition of the industry's high regard for our products and technologies."

A stable and reliable power supply is vital to the safe operations of a data center. A blackout can cost upwards of $1 million per hour. ABB MNS3.0 switchgears are suitable for indoor installations, and feature industry-leading technology, and a high degree of safety and reliability. ABB switchgears boast an excellent arc-resistance design and are capable of extinguishing an arc fault within 300 milliseconds, top in the industry thanks to its design and materials. They also enjoy consistent operating capabilities, reaching a 20-year lifespan. In addition, a compact design features a high level of anti-seismic and anti-impact resistance for earthquakes measuring up to 8 on the Richter scale. Equipment is made from eco-friendly materials, releasing no harmful gases or hazardous substances during the production process or service life.

For this project, each ABB MNS switchgear unit was supplied by ABB Xiamen LV Equipment Company, one of ABB's local companies in China. ABB Xiamen LV Equipment Company is not only ABB's biggest low-voltage switchgear manufacturer, but also one of the biggest manufacturers in China. To date, their products have been installed in key data center projects in China to include ICBC's data center in Shanghai, CMB's credit card center in Shanghai, Suzhou International Science Park's A5 data center and China Life's data center in Shanghai.

In the field of data centers, ABB's offerings include substations, switchgears, power distribution units (PDUs), emergency back-up power solutions, power management systems, circuit breakers, surge protectors, disconnectors, active filters, high-efficiency motors and drives, and building control and automation systems. Since 2011, ABB has made great strides in the area of data centers. It acquired Validus, an American company delivering DC power infrastructure equipment, and Newave, a Switzerland-based UPS manufacturer, to complement its product portfolio in the data center industry.

As an important aspect of modern society development, data centers store trillions of megabytes of information and operate around the clock to run applications, process information and automate operations. More than 5.75 million new servers are installed globally each year. Helping data centers achieve safe and reliable operations is key to maintaining sustainable economic growth.

Established in 2000, GDS is an IT service provider with world-class data centers, high-availability IT service experience, and an excellent ability to integrate industry chains. As a flagship data center of GDS, Shanghai Waigaoqiao data center underwent construction in January 2010. With a total gross floor area of 100,000 square meters, the whole project will be built in three phases. Upon completion, it will be the largest data center cluster in Asia. With a total land area of 24,000 square meters, the phase I project will provide standard and customized data center services including hosting and IT operation management.
