Beijing, August 21, 2013 -- ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced that it will provide Cosco (Nantong) Shipyard Company with integrated electricity, Azipod® CZ propulsion and automation systems for building two large offshore accommodation platform. With this deal, ABB will further secure its leadership in the marine field.
According to the deal, ABB will provide power systems for the two vessels, including generators, switchboards, transformers, and frequency converters. The order will also include the installation of 6 Azipod® CZ units. In addition, ABB will provide an 800xA Extended Automation platform, which includes vessel and power monitoring, emergency shutdown, and fire and gas control systems, as well as fully automated helideck monitoring systems and loading computers. As planned, ABB aims to complete full delivery by next October.
Heikki Soljama, head of ABB Marine and Cranes business unit, said, "ABB already has a large share of the onboard power and propulsion systems market. However, this order represents a milestone in our strategy to offer complete solutions for power, propulsion, automation, and vessel control. It is a step forward in providing solutions that feature enhanced energy efficiency, advanced technology and reliability, and improved asset management."
Unlike ordinary work vessels, these two offshore platforms will demand much higher standards of stability, efficiency, and comfort for the people who work and live onboard. ABB's integrated solution offers outstanding performance for all on board equipment and the advanced Azipod® propulsion system provides significantly improved maneuverability. The system also dramatically reduces noise and vibration to improve the comfort level of those working and living on board. This technology has been widely installed on luxury cruise ships for customers such as Carnival Corp. The Azipod system also features high fuel-saving advantages, having previously helped Yantai-Dalian Ferry reduce fuel consumption by 20%-30%.
The cylinder-shaped vessels, built by Cosco for Norwegian ship-owner Sevan Marine, will each have a displacement of about 40,000 tons and capacity to accommodate 490 persons. After sea trials in February 2015, the vessels will be delivered to Logitel Offshore, Sevan Marine's subsidiary in Singapore.
