ABB held the "Belt and Road" Customer Event in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, on September 4th, with the theme "Innovation backs connectivity - ABB partners with you in winning along the Silk Road". The event aimed to support local customers and customers from neighboring regions to further explore the market areas of Belt and Road, to innovate trade and investment models, and to build a green Silk Road together through innovative technologies and ABB Ability™ digital solutions together with ABB's rich experiences in global EPC project management.
Upon the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, the event re-echoed the "Re-take the Ancient Silk Road and Play the Chorus" program organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) from late August till middle September. More than 200 guests from the CPAFFC, local government, customers, and media attended the event.
"The Belt and Road Initiative has injected new momentum for China and the global economy and closed in the gap between the East and the West, opening up new space and opportunities for collaboration. ABB was one of the first group of multinational enterprises to be a partner of choice for Chinese companies in EPC with its wide business coverage in the fields of power and automation," said Jiang Haibo, Head of Industrial Automation division, ABB China.
Dr Li Xinyu, Director-General at CPAFFC's Exchange Center for International Friendship Cities, said the series of events held to reecho the old spirit of the ancient Silk Road aim to foster cooperation between counties along the route and innovate the way mutual trade is done. The complex and development wish of the Silk Road is not only a starting point in promoting the great Belt and Road Initiative, but also a standing point on which common recognition is based and the civilization is conceived.
Dr Liu Qianjin, Chief Technology Officer at ABB China, said in his keynotes that as a pioneer of digital technologies, ABB has introduced abundant ABB Ability™ digital offerings, covering fields such as smart grid, smart manufacturing, smart transport and smart city. Digital means, together with the momentum of the Belt and Road Initiative, are expected to help customers increase efficiency, improve energy efficiency, raise global competence, serving the construction of a digital Silk Road.
A considerable number of countries along the Belt and Road are less developed in fields such as utilities, industry, transportation and infrastructure. They urgently need to improve productivity and energy efficiency in the fields of power grid, mining, steel, non-ferrous metal, oil and gas industries. At the same time, they need to invest in the construction and renovation of facilities such as airports, ships, ports, roads, which are ABB's major business areas.
With a business network covering around 100 countries around the globe and abundant overseas project management experiences, ABB can provide localized consulting, design, engineering, manufacturing and services for Chinese companies' overseas EPC projects, helping them reduce project costs and engineering risks, as well as enhancing competitiveness in the global market.
Regarding the control over risk and standard, ABB can help Chinese enterprises solve different national and regional design and industry standards as well as other issues for better risk control; when it comes to cost control, ABB can help Chinese companies reduce investment and operating costs, increase production in overseas projects by comprehensive control, electrical, automation and telecommunications systems.
Xinjiang is a key area in the Silk Road economic zone, ABB has always attached importance to the development of Xinjiang and its surrounding areas, actively contributing to the transformation and development of the local economy. In 2015, ABB Xinjiang Service Center was officially established in Urumqi, serving customers from oil and gas, chemical, electrical power, metal, transportation and infrastructure sectors with full life-cycle management services, including installation and commissioning, spare parts, maintenance, repair, upgrade and rebuilding, training and consultation.
In recent years, ABB has participated in several key projects in Xinjiang, including:
- ABB has provided breakthrough technologies for the world's first ±1,100 KV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission link from Changji to Guquan. ABB was involved in the construction of the Hami-Zhengzhou ± 800kV UHVDC transmission project and Xinjiang- Northwest grid ± 750kV second channel project;
- ABB's efficient and reliable electrical equipment has been widely used in sites such as Xinjiang Electric Power Company Nanhu office building, Sheraton Hotel Urumqi, Xinjiang Military Command General Hospital, Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, Xinjiang Grand Theatre, Karamay Gymnasium and other landmark buildings, livelihood projects, ensuring reliable power supply for these projects;
- Xinjiang Nongliushi Xinfa Aluminum Industry Co., Ltd. owns the largest air-cooling island in the world, and runs day and night silently for the power plant to dissipate heat. The ABB low voltage transmission products and the ABB high efficiency motors applied in this air-cooling island can theoretically save about 30% of the energy.
- ABB Ability™ Manufacturing Execution System (MES) was installed at Xinjiang Western Tianshan Dairy Co., Ltd. to monitor and manage overall production, product and quality data, significantly improving the factory's productivity, stability and flexibility, strengthening its competitive in food and beverage field.
In addition, as a socially responsible company, in order to better support the development of local talents in Xinjiang, ABB donated power and automation equipment worth 1.7 million RMB to Xinjiang University for the establishment of a new laboratory in 2015, and pledged to give 100,000 RMB every year in the following 5 years as a scholarship to support local talent development.
