ABB joins ZPMC in developing overseas port service business

The two sides signed a memorandum of cooperation in port automation services

Beijing, June 5, 2014 - ABB, the global leader in power and automation technology, and the Product Service Center of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) have officially signed a memorandum of cooperation in Port Automation Service to strengthen cooperation in the port machinery transformation service sector. The two sides aim to improve project operation capabilities in areas of technical support and service, information sharing, spare parts supply, among others to optimize workflow and realize mutually beneficial results.

As a world-renowned manufacturer of crane and large-scale steel structures, ZPMC is also the world's only heavy lift manufacturer which boasts its own fleet of transportation ships. It enjoys a market share as high as 70% in the global port machinery market. Its products are sold in more than 200 ports in 86 countries and regions around the world, and it has established spare parts centers in U.S., Europe, Dubai, South Korea, Singapore and Istanbul.

In response to the huge amount of globally installed capacity and customers' growing demands for equipment maintenance, upgrading and transformation services, ZPMC has put forward a global strategy of developing the value-added service market to facilitate its transformation from equipment manufacturer to equipment service provider. According to its plan, ZPMC will set up 15 port machinery service and spare parts centers in the world, so as to expand its presence in overseas market and improve its influence and international competitiveness.

Consistent with ZPMC's strategy, ABB has also been keen to develop the service sector. In the first quarter of 2014, service orders accounted for 18% of ABB Group's total orders. In China, ABB has set up 10 large-scale integrated service centers in Suzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Jinan, Xi'an, Wuhan, Shenyang and Qingdao to provide a full range of comprehensive services for its customers.

ABB's cooperation with ZPMC can be traced back to 1992. In 2007, ABB provided a full set of crane automation and support systems for 74 ZPMC-developed container cranes, including controllers and corresponding software, low voltage AC motors and inverters, power transformers and switchgears. In 2009, ABB and ZPMC jointly developed propulsion solutions for seagoing ships with deeper draft, such as heavy-duty ships and drilling platforms, so as to increase the operating efficiency of deep sea ships.

This memorandum of cooperation has created great potential for the two sides to expand cooperation. With a comprehensive portfolio of power and automation products and services, ABB will support ZPMC's development of the overseas service transformation market.
