A Swedish delegation led by State Secretary Nils Vikmång visited ABB China's headquarters in Beijing on December 9 with a focus on smart grid development.
Dr. Chunyuan Gu, Senior Vice President of ABB Group and Chairman and President of ABB (China) Ltd., and Vikmång, who also chairs the Forum for Swedish Smart Grids, shared insights on smart grids, an area of common interest between the two sides. As a leader in industrial digitalization, ABB provides a broad portfolio of smart grid solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power, including the integration of clean energy, ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) technology, distributed power generation, smart substations and e-mobility. ABB also provides real-time monitoring of smart grid products based on cloud services to ensure safe and reliable operation of power grid.
ABB smart grid technologies are used in major projects worldwide. In Sweden, ABB participated in the Stockholm Royal Seaport project by providing smart grid solutions such as automated intelligent urban distribution grid, demand response management, and the integration of renewable energy and electric vehicles. Local authorities anticipate the area will be fossil fuel free by 2030 with the sustainable city development project.
Here in China, ABB's distribution automation solution is helping improve power reliability in Pudong, the financial district of Shanghai. The project will enhance security of power supply to some of the city's landmark structures, including the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center, with yearly power outage time to be capped below five minutes in the area.
Elsewhere, ABB has participated in a number of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission projects in China, including the first ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project that links the Xiangjiaba Dam in southwest China and Shanghai on the east coast, and supplies breakthrough technology for China's next-generation smart substations project.
The Swedish delegation wrapped up their stay here by visiting the ABB China smart grid showroom.
Accompanying Vikmång were Tony Clark, advisor of the Division for International Affairs of the Swedish Ministry of the Environment and Energy, Bengt Toresson, director of the Ministry's Department of Energy, as well as representatives of the Swedish Energy Agency and the Embassy of Sweden in China.
