Qingdao, October 23, 2015 -- ABB, the world's leading power and automation technology group, announced that it will provide nearly 700 tailored low-voltage motors for the stacker application in the Phase I project of the automated terminal of Qingdao Port, to cater for the construction as well as efficient and reliable operation of the terminal. The first 180 units have been delivered and the remaining motors will be delivered in three batches.
Qingdao Port Container Terminal is the fourth-generation fully automated terminal built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) for Qingdao Port Qianwan Terminal. It can now accommodate the world's largest 19,000-TEU container ships and 24,000-TEU ones in future. Upon completion, the terminal will be one of the most automated container terminals with the highest handling efficiency, with 70% less manpower and 30% higher efficiency.
Stacker is the core system and "porter" of the automated high-rise warehouse for a terminal. Achieving high-speed, high-output and continuous stacking by setting the speed of stackers is the key to efficient cargo handling at automated terminal. However, frequent starting, braking and reversing of stackers in operation will lead to high load, high overload together with strong mechanical vibration and shock for motors.
Considering the application features, ABB has simulated and optimized the electrical design solution and performance of the motors to ensure that the motors can meet the actual requirements of high starting torque and maximum torque while avoid over-temperature caused by rapid running of the stackers. Moreover, ABB has improved the reliability and service life of the motors by optimizing their insulation system and also enhanced the motors' tolerance to external shocks through enhanced design of their mechanical structure.
"The requirements on motors' performance and exterior design vary from one application to another," said Wu Yuhui, head of ABB Motors & Generators in China. "As a leading motor manufacturer in the world, ABB is committed to offering tailored motor products and services to meet the specific application needs of various industries, helping customers improve efficiency and performance."
Besides Qingdao, ABB has also provided tailored motor products for the fully automated terminals of multiple ports, such as Xiamen and Shanghai, supporting the automation and modernization construction of China's ports.
