ABB motors included in China’s Energy Efficient Products Catalog

ABB products help customers achieve energy conservation

Beijing, August 23, 2010 -ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced that a total of 92 models of ABB M3BP and M3BA Series local made three-phase asynchronous motors, with a power range 0.55kW to 315kW, have been listed on the country directory of China's Energy Efficient Products Promotion Project.

Robert Larsson, head of the ABB Discrete Automation and Motion division of ABB North Asia and China, said, "ABB is a global leader in energy efficiency, and the high performance motor is core product of our energy efficiency product family. The listing of ABB motors among the first group shows high recognition from both government and customers."

The listed ABB M3BP and M3BA Series motors have been proven well performed and of high reliability and safty in the industries for instance marine, crane, metallurgy, pulp & paper, minerals, power plant and cements, etc. The products offer 2 to 3 percentage points of higher efficiency than the same class motors commonly adopted in China. They can be used together with variable speed drives to maximize energy efficiency. The M3BP series are low voltage high performance process motors locally produced with high precision operation and especially address the complicated demands for performance motors in continuous process industries.

The Energy Efficient Products Promotion Project, initiated by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Finance in May 2009, aims to promote 10 categories of products above energy efficiency level 2 through financial subsidies. These products include motors, automobiles, and home appliances. The listed companies, by accepting government subsidies, agree to sell these products at lower prices, helping customers save both investments in purchasing and energy costs in applications.

The announcement regarding the High Efficiency Motor Promotion List from China's Energy Efficient Products Promotion Project is of great importance to China's industrial energy conservation and emission reduction effort. Research shows that electric motors account for 65% of total industrial power consumption. Upgrading every inefficient motor in China could reduce power consumption by 19 billion kWh, equivalent to the total annual consumption of 2.9 million Chinese households.

Answering the call for energy conservation by the Chinese government, ABB Motors and Machines Business Unit is committed to the production, promotion and certification of energy efficient products, and has provided strong support for the nationwide Energy Efficiency Products Promotion Project. In May 2008, the business unit completed both its energy efficiency product labeling and the record keeping for its testing laboratory. Later that year, it was among the first group of member companies to join China's Energy Label Alliance of Trustworthy Enterprises. ABB Motors also passed the on-site inspection by the Energy Efficiency Testing Lab of the China Energy Label Center. ABB M3BP Series three-phase asynchronous motors obtained the National Energy Conservation Product Certification in 2009, and the M3BA Series was certified in 2010.
