ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today announced the successful implementation of a comprehensive Network Manager SCADA/EMS solution (supervisory control and data acquisition/Energy Management System) for National Grid USA. This marks the culmination of a project to increase reliability and improve service for the utility's 3.4 million energy customers on the East Coast of the US.

The project includes the upgrade of National Grid's transmission and distribution control centers in upstate New York and Massachusetts, standardizing the systems on ABB's latest network management technologies. ABB provided design, engineering, software, hardware, system implementation and related services to implement the SCADA/EMS, which will enable National Grid to deliver secure, efficient and optimized operation of their electric power system.

"We are pleased to support National Grid's initiative to enhance the reliability and security of power supplies for millions of consumers," said Claudio Facchin, president of ABB's Power Systems division. "This project is a good example of the scalability of our network management solutions to support the most demanding requirements. It also reinforces our Next Level strategic focus to further strengthen our power automation business, as grids and networks get smarter."

The Network Manager platform includes the SCADA system, advanced power system applications, user interface with advanced visualization and situational awareness, as well as a fully integrated operator-training simulator. It features system integration capabilities including the use of CIM (Common Information Model), full system redundancy and scope for expansion, and will help National Grid meet its cybersecurity requirements (NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection).

"ABB is a key partner in our strategy to be a recognized leader in the development and operation of safe, reliable and sustainable energy infrastructure, to meet the needs of our customers and communities and to generate value for our investors," said John Spink, VP Operations, National Grid. "Their network management solutions are helping us build a high-performance and high-availability transmission system, improving grid operation and security."

ABB is a world-leading supplier of Enterprise Software solutions for utility, industry and infrastructure customers across sectors. These solutions help bridge the gap between information technologies (IT) and operational technologies (OT), enabling clients to make faster, better-informed decisions in daily operations and long-term planning strategies.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact.
