ABB launches Energy Snapshot to expose wastage in buildings

At EMEX 2019, ABB is sharing a new process to help companies quickly identify where they are most likely to be wasting energy.

Stand E40, 27-28 November, ExCel London: At this year’s EMEX show, ABB is launching an updated energy assessment process, specifically targeting the financial community, energy managers and maintenance teams.

The Energy Snapshot is a six-step process in which an ABB engineer or one of its approved partners visits a site and in half-a-day identifies up to five motor driven applications that are wasting the most energy. Typical applications examined include pumps, fans and compressors.

The output from the Energy Snapshot is an Executive Summary, tailored to meet the specific needs of financial, energy or maintenance managers. The summary highlights which applications can benefit from retrofitting or upgrading variable speed drives and/or high efficiency motors, together with an estimate of the energy and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions saving potential.

Seminar explains reasoning behind Energy Snapshot

The importance of tailoring the Executive Summary to specific job roles is explained in a 30-minute seminar by ABB’s Steve Hughes, entitled “Energy savings with VSDs in a digital age”. The seminar is held on Thursday 28th November at 1000, in Theatre 3, as part of the session “Built Environment, Technology and Innovation”.

“Motor-driven applications are rarely seen or heard unless something goes wrong. To that end, VSDs are not generally front of many employees’ minds when it comes to energy saving initiatives,” says Hughes. “This lack of awareness means that companies could be missing out on the significant energy savings that VSDs can deliver. It is, therefore, important that energy managers can build a compelling business case so that others can understand the potential benefits.”

Visitors to either the seminar or the ABB stand can sign up for an Energy Snapshot or to attend one of ABB’s CPD-approved energy training courses, which can be held at a customer site or ABB location.

Energy saving VSD demonstration

Stand visitors can learn first-hand the impact that VSDs can have on energy saving by way of a balloon exhibit that demonstrates the cube law. Supporting the messaging is a VSD demo that simulates the functions of a simple variable air volume (VAV) HVAC application whilst showing the full capabilities of the latest drive. Using synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) technology, features like motor flying start in real fan application is shown. The demo also highlights BACnet interoperability and drive intelligence, while a human-machine-interface (HMI) simulates a BMS operator workstation via BACnet. The drive’s intelligence is used to control external devices, including a VAV controller dampers or monitor actual analogue signals.

Service of the future

An augmented reality demo is the proof-of-concept for the future of servicing drives and other equipment. It is built on Microsoft HoloLens AR technology and frees the hands of the service personnel from having to use laptop or browse a manual while servicing the equipment. The demo shows how service personnel receives the info about the drive and its maintenance.

ABB Ability digital powertrain

The powertrain comprises a suite of digital technologies that ABB has developed to improve the performance, reliability and efficiency of all components within the powertrain: from drives and motors, to pumps, couplings and gearboxes and bearings.

Using the capabilities of ABB Ability™ digital technology, the digital powertrain combines a range of products and services including ABB Ability™ Smart Sensors, monitoring tools and an interactive portal.

Data gathered from drives, motors, bearings and pumps, can be aggregated, stored and further accessed via the cloud. The ability to gather and analyse this data can reveal information on the status and condition of a site’s equipment, so that the user can intelligently maintain and manage the performance of the powertrain.

A scalable service plan enables you to tailor monitoring and servicing precisely according to your needs, with options to include predictive maintenance, remote assistance and automated reporting.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a technology leader that is driving the digital transformation of industries. With a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB has four customer-focused, globally leading businesses: Electrification, Industrial Automation, Motion, and Robotics & Discrete Automation, supported by the ABB Ability™ digital platform. ABB’s Power Grids business will be divested to Hitachi in 2020. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 147,000 employees. www.abb.com
