On December 6, 2017, ABB officially opened its Shenzhen New Energy Technology Center, which is its first power electronics R&D center for solar and electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities in China. The R&D center is established as part of ABB's continuous investment in such technologies as high-power power electronics, embedded and cloud platforms, and thermal management to support the company's new digitization strategy, ABB Ability™, and better support its solar and EV charging infrastructure businesses in China and worldwide.
Wu You, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Zhao Junping, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Shenzhen Baoan District, Gao Rongwang, Secretary of the Party Working Committee of the Xinan Community of Shenzhen Baoan District, Zhong Hai, Deputy Director of the Energy Department of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Committee, and other government officials of the city, as well as ABB's local Shenzhen customers, attended the opening ceremony of the R&D center.
"So far, ABB has had a 2,000 strong R&D team in China. Our vision is to take root in China and serve the world," said Liu Qianjin, Chief Technology Officer of ABB China. "Therefore, the New Energy Technology Center in Shenzhen will make full use of ABB's more than 30 years of technical experience in high-power semiconductor devices and gain synergy with ABB's other global product R&D centers and seven major corporate research centers located in seven countries. We believe that the R&D center will attract talent in the area of power electronics from China and the world, get closer to the Chinese market and better leverage China's cost advantages and innovative capabilities, as well as sound value chains to respond quickly to the needs of the Chinese and global markets."
China is the largest PV and EV market. ABB focuses on PV inverters and EV charging infrastructure, which are anticipated to have high growth in the future.
In the PV inverter market, ABB offers comprehensive products covering 3kW-1.3MW applications for residential through to power customers. ABB's efficient inverters have been successfully installed in several major PV power plants in Gansu and Jiangsu in China.
In 2017, China recently became the fifth country to say it will eventually phase out cars powered by fossil fuels. In the EV charging infrastructure market, ABB's products range from 10kW to 360KW, able to meet various scenarios from family cars to buses. In particular, in the recently completed 'smart parking + charging integration' Shenzhen pilot project debut in China, ABB provided four Terra63z, 60kW DC fast chargers compliant with the China's national standard to support the charging of all popular EV-types. Targeting the unattended operation in public areas, these are leading-edge innovative chargers in China in terms of intelligent test/operation/maintenance, safety and charging technology.
Shenzhen has been one of the cities, for many years in a row, with the most patent applications in China. A host of global industry giants in new energy and the Internet have set up R&D centers in the city, as too have many outstanding Chinese companies. Shenzhen is the country's fourth-largest city by economic measures creating a clustering effects in talent, resources and upstream and downstream industry chains. At the end of 2015, ABB signed a cooperation framework agreement with Shenzhen to deepen mutual cooperation in the development of new energy, power protection and green transportation.
"Shenzhen as one of the most innovation-oriented and vibrant cities in China, and even in the world. It will certainly support the opening of the new energy facilities in the city so as to achieve sustainable growth together with ABB, which takes innovation as its core value," said Mr. Wu.
