ABB introduces new digital test switch

Original provider of Flexitest (FT) switches launches revolutionary technology to make testing safer, faster, and easier

ABB today introduced a new test switch solution for digital switchgear using current and voltage sensors. With the FT-14D Digital FlexitestTM switches, a new era of protection relay testing can be performed more safely, quickly and easily. The FT-14D switch allows a customer to integrate current and voltage sensors within digital switchgear and protective relays and thereby enable the Industrial Internet of Things.

The FT-14D incorporates a passive electronic module on the rear with RJ45 connectors to the relays and sensors, while still maintaining the same switch design customers are familiar with on the front. The plug-and-play RJ45 interface harness allows for ease of installation. Meanwhile, the color-coded and lamicoid-labeled front handles allow for easy identification of circuits for testing. It is EMI/RFI (electromagnetic interference/radio frequency interference) and ESD (electrostatic discharge) proof for added security. Historically, there are safety concerns when testing with traditional current and voltage transformers, exposing you to potential blades when you short-circuit the output of the current transformers; this concern is virtually eliminated.

“ABB is proud to continue its leadership in the Flexitest switch product line,” said Richard Lindo, General Manager for Electrification Products Distribution Solutions, Control and Protection Products – Distribution Automation. “We want to enable customers to operate the same tests in a safer and easier way, using the latest technology available.”

ABB’s newest enhancements to the FT product line prove its dedication to providing customers with safer and more reliable solutions. FT-14D has two styles, allowing an additional ground CT or 14 potential type poles. ABB will be displaying this equipment at IEEE T&D 2018 in Denver, CO at ABB booth #2510.
