ABB launches celebrations for 125-year anniversary with Allegra train bearing historical ABB highlights

This year ABB celebrates its 125th anniversary in Switzerland and will mark the anniversary with a number of events in Switzerland and around the world. To kick off the anniversary year an Allegra train from the Rhaetian Railway (RhB), already equipped with ABB's innovative traction and regenerative braking systems, has been decorated to show a visual timeline of ABB’s pioneering history in Switzerland and throughout the world.

Bearing the company's signet of "125 years in Switzerland" the train also displays facts and graphics highlighting historic milestones from the company's many exciting technology innovations over its long history in Switzerland.

During this year's edition of the World Economic Forum, with international political and business leaders attending from Jan. 20 to Jan. 23, 2016, the newly branded ABB train will operate from Landquart to the Swiss ski village of Davos several times a day throughout the event.

An innovative traction system from ABB enables the Allegra electric trains to smoothly travel the European Alp's highest rail crossing, the Bernina Pass, regardless of frigid winter weather conditions. That`s why passengers traveling to and from the WEF are guaranteed uninterrupted service. In below-freezing winter temperatures, a train's overhead line supplying electricity to the locomotive can become coated with ice. ABB's traction system uses a sophisticated software that recognizes when ice is building up on the wires and automatically generates electric arcs to keep the electricity flowing, thus vaporizing any ice on the wires.

After the WEF, the ABB-branded Allegra will carry passengers along the entire Rhaetian Railways` network in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, a region of spectacular mountain scenery whose sights include the six-arched viaduct over the Landwasser River, listed among United Nations' World Cultural Heritage sites since 2008.

Additional events and celebrations for the anniversary are taking place throughout the year in close association with ABB Switzerland. Among other things, ABB will be prominent at the opening of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the world, on June 1.
