The purpose of the IEC commission is to approve electrical equipment standards. The commission's decisions are based on the preparatory work of national and international working groups. The working groups have representatives from electrical and electronics industry, the energy companies and other operators in the field.
Hasse began his IEC career working in switchgear working groups and has continued his work in transformer standards working groups since the 1980s. "At Strömberg's time it was important because Strömberg was still quite unknown to the world. The working groups were one way to be seen and heard at that time," said Hasse.
The working groups are also a very good way to influence the content of international standards since the working group's task is to prepare drafts for voting. "When you are drawing up the standardization documents you indeed get to know what the standard includes."
Opportunities for networking
National and international working groups are also good opportunities to meet especially customers. "In the 1970s, there was a national committee for standardization work and the meetings were a good opportunity to pave the way for long-term customer relationships, for example, with Finnish energy companies like Imatran Voima and Helsingin Energia," Hasse said.
IEC 1906 Award is granted to a particularly distinguished member of the IEC activities. According to the criteria for the award, the recipient has demonstrated exemplary interest and knowledge in electrical engineering development and advocacy.
