Under terms of the contract, ABB will supply 18 power transformers in total, including five 230 megavolt ampere (MVA) 315 kilovolt (kV) generator start-up (GSU) transformers; two 125 MVA 315-138-25 kV and seven 280 MVA 735-315-13.8 kV substation autotransformers; and four 200 MVA 230-15-25 kV full design-type power transformers. Deliveries are scheduled for 2015-2016.

The quality of power transformers is key to enabling a reliable and efficient power grid. The new facility is critical infrastructure for the Muskrat Falls Project, which will provide clean, renewable power to the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as Canada`s eastern coast.

Nalcor Energy is leading the development of the Muskrat Falls Project and is a provincial government energy corporation headquartered in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Through its subsidiary businesses and operations, it generates and delivers electricity to Newfoundland and Labrador, Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and parts of the Northeastern United States.

The lower Churchill River in Labrador is considered one of the most attractive undeveloped hydroelectric resources in North America. The two sites on the river at Muskrat Falls and Gull Island have a combined capacity of more than 3,000 MW, it is expected to provide 16.7 terawatt hours of electricity annually and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout Northeastern North America. Construction on the Muskrat Falls Project commenced in 2013 and first power is expected in late 2017.

Transformers are integral components of an electrical grid and are essential for the efficient and safe conversion of electricity between diverse voltage systems. ABB's transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1,200 kV, dry- and liquid-distribution transformers, traction and special application transformers as well as related services and components.
