ABB’s Ramsis Girgis awarded the IEEE Standards Medallion

Dr. Ramsis Girgis, the R&D Manager at ABB’s Power Transformer business located in St. Louis, was recently awarded the prestigious IEEE Standards Medallion.

Ramsis received this award at a gala banquet held on December 8, 2013 at The Palace in Somerset, NJ. Ramsis was named the recipient of this 2013 award, "...For sustained leadership and accomplishment in the development of transformer standards on Audible Noise, Loss Measurement, Magnetics, and Geo - magnetically Induced Currents."

Ramsis has been active in the IEEE Transformer Standards committee for more than three decades. He has contributed to the Standards committee works in developing and upgrading a number of the IEEE transformer Standards. He was the Chairman of the Work Group that developed the IEEE "Guide for accurate measurement of Transformer Losses" and from 2002 to 2009, he was the Chairman of the "Performance Characteristics" Subcommittee that is the umbrella for over 10 Standards Work Groups and Task Forces. He is presently the chairman of the Task Force responsible for a significant revision of the IEEE Standards on measuring transformer noise.

"It is truly an honor to receive this recognition to my contributions to the IEEE Industry Standards," said Ramsis. "This would not be possible without the innovation, hard work, and support of the ABB R&D team and my ABB transformer colleagues in St. Louis and around the world."

Ramsis is the leader of the global ABB R&D activities on "Transformer Core Performance" and is a co-leader of the global ABB R&D activities in the area of "Transformer Noise." Ramsis received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, in Electrical Engineering in 1978. He has over 45 years of R&D experience in the area of power, distribution, and high frequency transformers, rotating machines, and pulse power components. He has been with ABB (and Westinghouse) since 1980, and has published more than 50 scientific papers in IEEE, IEE, CIGRE, and other international journals. From 1990 to 1995, Dr. Girgis was the US Technical Advisor to IEC 14.
