ABB high efficiency distribution transformer launched in China

Special alloy core reduces no-load electrical losses by about 70%.

ABB has successfully launched a high-efficiency distribution transformer built in China, where strong demand for the world`s most energy-efficient power products continues to grow.

ABB`s 500kVA (kilovolt ampere), high-efficiency amorphous metal distribution transformer, built by the ABB Hefei Transformer Co., uses a special metal alloy core to reduce no-load losses by about 70%.

Amorphous metal distribution transformers are key to enabling utilities reducing costs and improve the energy efficiency of power systems. The first order to ABB Hefei on the products came from Tianjin PSB and it was for 205 units.

"The amorphous core transformers much lower losses result in significant energy and monetary savings over the lifetime of the transformer," said Markus Heimbach, head of the Transformers business, a part of ABB's Power Products division. "For utilities committed to energy savings, the amorphous core transformer is a powerful tool for reducing costs and conserving energy."

The vast installed base of distribution transformers means reducing these losses has a significant energy savings potential.

In average an amorphous core distribution transformers typically reduce the total operating losses 40% compared to a conventional distribution transformer.

ABB Hefei Transformer Company Limited was the first Power Transformer Joint Venture set up by ABB Group in China in 1992. It presently has more than 800 employees in three product divisions - power transformers, distribution transformers, and insulation and components.
