ABB undertakes breakthrough power rental transformers project for Saudi Arabia's TAAQA

The ABB transformer factory in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, won a breakthrough order from a key customer in the power rental industry, Al Zahid subsidiary Energy and Environmental Solutions Co. Ltd. (TAAQA) to supply a tailor made distribution transformer solution.

Under the terms of contract, ABB has provided TAAQA with forty units of a unique transformer type, a step-up oil-pit fitted transformer that can be used in 380, 400 and 480 V generator systems to step up to voltages of 13,800 V at 60 Hz and 11,080 V at 50 Hz.

The transformer design was very demanding by the need to produce units that would work at dual frequencies, dual primary voltages and dual secondary voltages. "Even though we had very special requirements, ABB was able to meet those needs. We are very happy with ABB's solution and project execution," said Ramadan El Dewak at TAAQA. "All transformers were delivered on time and as per the contract," added El Dewak.

"ABB is always keen to listen to customers and to work together on a best common solution," said Mohammed Megdad, the head of the local transformers business unit. "As one of the largest suppliers of generators in the Kingdom, TAAQA has been a strategic potential customer for ABB for some time. We are delighted that we could offer a very tailor made transformer solution for TAAQA considering the challenging speciation."
