High efficient power transformers for sustainable HV transmission networks

Transformers are one of the most efficient electrical machines, with efficiencies in the 99% range, but still having potential for improvement.

Power transformers have a long life, exceeding 40 years in operation in numerous cases, which added to their large capacity, mean many kW of losses.

Therefore, increasing the efficiency of the power transformers installed in HV transmission networks implies energetic and economic savings and, as a direct result, a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions like CO2.

By means of technological and product innovation, ABB is providing REE (Red Eléctrica de España) efficient transformers using advanced materials and state of the art calculations, that have implied a total loss reduction higher than 10%.

REE standardized 600 MVA bank of transformers has evolved from 1005 kW to 900 kW total losses, that is equivalent to a reduction of emissions of 275 ton per year. The annual reduction associated to polytransformers is 310 ton, because of 123 kW losses improvement to reach 975 kW.

The approximate 20,000 MVA in transformers supplied by ABB to REE in the past seven years, equate to an estimated saving in losses by 25 GWh/year with a 10,000 tons reduction of CO2 per year.

Considering the operational life of the transformers, the total reduction of CO2 emissions is equivalent to plant 400,000 trees that have a surface of more than 1000 soccer playing fields.
The procurement of more efficient assets like those power transformers is fully in line with REE's mission and strategy focusing on sustainability and environmental protection.
