ABB launches a dry DC capacitor for multilevel converter topologies

The DryDCap is a dry DC capacitor for modern multilevel converter topologies such as used in HVDC-light and SVC-light applications, as well as in motor-drives and other static converters, rail applications etc.

The product uses self-healing metalized film. If a puncture should occur in the dielectric, it is electrically insulated from the rest of the capacitor. Low inductance leads to better protection of the semiconductors.
The low inductance design of DryDCap results in very limited voltage transients occurring when the semiconductors are switching. Consequently, the semiconductors see a lower voltage stress contributing to their longer lifetime.

The electrode segmentation ensures that at end of life the energy going into a puncture is limited to acceptable levels and hence a safe end of life situation is realized.
