ABB launches a new range of low voltage capacitor banks for power factor correction

The APCQ range of low voltage automatic capacitor banks are an ideal solution for industrial and commercial applications

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has launched the new generation of APCQ capacitor banks, which help reduce utility penalties for low power factor, optimize energy consumption, increase power availability and ultimately help improve overall business performance.

The APCQ range offers three type of capacitor banks:

  • APCQ-L, a wall-mounted and compact cubicle,
  • APCQ-M, a free floor standing cabinet for networks slightly polluted by harmonics,
  • APCQ-R, a free floor standing cabinet, with detuned reactors for networks polluted by harmonics.

The APCQ series is easy to install, operate and service and offers exceptional reliability and safety to customers. Installation of the APCQ is fast because of its easy access to all electrical connections. The modular design allows easy maintenance and has space provision to increase the power rating if required in the future. ABB customers also benefit from a total cost of ownership approach that goes well beyond supplying equipment. ABB and its channel partners can support customers in every step of their project, from identification of the needs to installation and commissioning of the equipment. ABB also offers a comprehensive equipment maintenance and repair service across the globe.

The new APCQ range of capacitor banks use proven and innovative ABB technology which includes ABB's new low voltage capacitor QCap. The reliability and the safety of this range is further ensured by other ABB components produced in line with strict specifications: ABB reactors with a specific design for electrical robustness towards networks with harmonics and ABB UA range of contactors optimized for capacitor switching. The APCQ-R range is capable of handling voltage distortion pollution levels of 8%, in line with voltage distortion levels on the LV bus that can practically appear in industrial networks. The APCQ range has an intuitive interface thanks to ABB RVC or RVT controllers.

Through the APCQ series, ABB offers its customer a ready to use solution for power factor correction to:

  • avoid penalties from the utility,
  • optimize energy consumption and help reduce electrical bills, power losses and CO2 emissions,
  • increase power availability by off-loading the transformer and the risk of power outage, thereby optimizing the installation size.

The APCQ range can be used to control the PF in diverse types of customer networks including residential/commercial buildings, and in diverse industries like mining, steel, chemical, pulp and paper, cement, plastics, printing, automotive, food & beverage and light-to-medium manufacturing.

The new APCQ range of low voltage automatic capacitor banks are one example of ABB's diverse offering for solving a variety of power quality challenges for consumers and suppliers of electrical power.
