ABB extends its railway apparatus portfolio with air-insulated disconnector

ABB has introduced a new air insulated disconnector for outdoor railway applications. The same design covers both one-phase and two-phase 25 kV power supply systems.

  • Air-insulated disconnector for 25 kV, 2000 A and 250 kV BIL
  • Tested according to IEC 62271-102 and EN 50152-2
  • High flexibility to meet most customer requirements
  • Polymeric insulators show better performance in polluted environments: no frequent cleaning costs, no vandalism damage, minimal inventory costs
  • Compatibility with existing modules requires minimal design or re-design effort
  • Few moving parts minimize maintenance costs

The introduction of the air-insulated disconnector closes a portfolio gap that will enable ABB to reach a wider share of the market. Because the disconnector is compatible with Structure Mounted Outdoor Switchgear (SMOS) modules, it will help create coherency in the portfolio. EZC 25 will match all relevant customer requirements, such as a rated current up to 2000 A and 250 kV Basic Insulation Level (BIL). Also the EZC is type tested according to the latest standard IEC 62271-102 and specific railway standard EN 50152-2.

Matching ever increasing health and safety standards, the disconnector fills a previously unoccupied gap in the ABB portfolio of railway disconnectors. The visible isolation and earthing connection contributes to the safety of operating personnel in railway feeding stations and the catenary system.

Even though the disconnector operates with air as a means of insulation, its product packaging is superior, resulting in a lower foot print at the customer's site. This serves as competitive edge when having to deal with limited available space for switchgear.
Taking into account that many railway infrastructure operators have their own design guidelines and certification processes, EZC 25 is designed to meet virtually all requirements. At the same time, the EZC disconnector comes in only a few variants that will help to capitalize on economies of scale in production. By introducing this solution, ABB can fortify its superior brand in the railway business and reinforce its position as one-stop-shop for the customer.
