Global telecommunications and computing systems companies choose ABB Decathlon® to enable data center infrastructure management

ABB Decathlon DCIM will help reduce energy costs and improve uptime through comprehensive infrastructure management and intelligent automation

Zurich, March 31, 2014 - ABB, a global leader in power and automation technology, announced that a major multinational telecommunications provider and one of the world's leading computing systems companies will use ABB Decathlondata center infrastructure management (DCIM) to furnish comprehensive visibility, decision support and control of infrastructure at separate data center projects in India and China. Due to security policies, the customer names were not disclosed.

For the telecommunications company, Decathlon will provide the tools to manage tens of thousands of critical equipment calculated points at a data center in Mumbai, India. The computing systems company will implement Decathlon in a data center for a large international financial institution located in Beijing, China. Both orders represent important developments in ABB's data center business in Asia, as well as recognition of the value of Decathlon in supporting global enterprises across rapidly expanding markets.

The telecommunications provider selected Decathlon to monitor and optimize systems in an approximately 4,000-square-meter data center near Mumbai houses about 1,800 racks. The company needed a common platform to monitor its electrical power, and the initial implementation is anticipated to expand to IT asset management as the center moves toward Tier 4 status, the highest level of data center performance certification.

During the first phase of implementation, Decathlon will monitor a wide range of devices and equipment used for critical functions, involving some 76,000 points. It will continuously monitor the building management system, substation SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and the entire power chain, including:

· Diesel generator sets

· Breakers rated from 11 KV to 415 KV

· Ring main units for electrical distribution

· Power distribution units

· Low- and medium-voltage automatic transfer switch systems

· Distribution transformers

· Electrical tap-off boxes

· Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) batteries

· Branch circuits

· Multi-function energy meters

The telecommunications company leadership indicated they chose Decathlon because it offers comprehensive visibility and monitoring to help better manage system performance and energy consumption. Decathlon will empower data center managers at the Mumbai location with increased insights and intelligence for more efficient decision making.

In Beijing, the computing systems company chose Decathlon for its data center to monitor mechanical and power systems, environmental subsystems, equipment and sensors and controls. Operations at this data center began in September, 2013.

"These two customers recognize the flexibility and scalability of ABB Decathlon for their data centers in Asia, as well as our proven expertise in the field of critical industries," said Madhav Kalia, ABB Control Technologies vice president of data center solutions in Asia Pacific. "Decathlon provides maximum reliability for data center infrastructure management, and our technology will improve uptime and allow these operators to make exceptional energy efficiency savings, as well as lower environmental impact."

Decathlon provides the tools to manage a flexible network of power, cooling and IT systems so data center professionals can deliver data services faster, in the most reliable, efficient and sustainable way possible. It enables faster and more accurate decision making with forecasts, historical trends, automated workflow processes, unified alarm management and incident reporting, while maximizing efficiencies through automation.
