Protect Resources - towards decarbonization

Solutions that optimize maritime transportation have tremendous potential: every year, more than ten billion tons of freight – around 90 percent of global trade – is moved by sea. According to the International Chamber of Shipping, the demand for maritime transportation has risen by 30 percent over the last ten years.

It is important, however, that these developments are aligned with sustainability targets for the maritime industry. Today, shipping is responsible for emitting close to one billion tons of carbon dioxide annually, which equates to about 2,7 percent of greenhouse gas emissions produced by humans. The International Maritime Organization, a United Nations agency responsible for regulating shipping, has set a global target for ships is to cut annual emissions by at least 50 percent by 2050 from 2008 levels.

ABB supplies proven technologies that reduce marine emissions to a wide range of vessel types – from large ocean-going ships to smaller crafts covering shorter distances.
