ABB has launched the ABB Ability Power Transformer as the first integrated solution for digitally enabled power transformers. All power transformers leaving ABB’s factories will soon come enabled with digital capabilities for real-time remote monitoring and data analytics.
This will benefit operators by enabling enhanced reliability and condition-based maintenance, as well as higher availability and utilisation of grid assets and power networks. In addition, early warnings and alerts will prevent failures and unexpected outages and will reduce risk to operating staff. Overall, these benefits represent operational savings and a reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).
ABB has launched the ABB Ability Power Transformer as the first integrated solution for digitally enabled power transformers. All power transformers leaving ABB’s factories will soon come enabled with digital capabilities for real-time remote monitoring and data analytics. With the digital capability being integrated from the outset, it gives transformer operators full control over data for the asset’s lifecycle. For example, the data analytics will give operators the ability to make informed decision on actions such as whether to overload a transformer, schedule maintenance or delay the replacement of an aging asset.
A hub will provide digital capabilities based on the proven CoreTec technology. This will allow integration of a portfolio of smart devices. These can monitor aspects of transformer health such as oil level and temperature and levels of dissolved hydrogen and moisture in the oil. The hub is modular and scalable, meaning that it is future-proof as alternative or additional sensors can be added.
Operators will be able to download sensor data direct from the device, connect the hub to their station-level control room or upload the information to an enterprise-level system.
Claudio Facchin, President of ABB’s Power Grids division said: “The ABB Ability Power Transformer solution is a game changer. In addition to providing actionable intelligence at the local level, it will enable users to leverage the full ecosystem of software solutions and services at the station and enterprise levels, such as our industry leading ABB Ability Ellipse® Asset Performance Management System.
“In addition to enhancing efficiency and product life, the new digital capability will boost reliability and mitigate outages through preventative action.”
