ABB provides remote monitoring of critical power supplies

iUPSGuard minimizing site visits and guaranteeing system availability for thousands of critical power assets worldwide

An innovative remote diagnostics online platform - now also available as an app for Android and iOS - is helping critical power supplies – including intensive care units, data centers and other essential services – to stay up and running, while minimizing on-site inspections and maintenance. iUPSGuard limits any onsite work to essential, fully pre-assessed visits, benefiting operations where access is problematic.

Following ABB’s acquisition of General Electric Industrial Solutions, the company has worked to make the iUPSGuard fully compatible with its complete range of UPS solutions. Users can monitor their UPS from any device, with 24-7 active supervision from ABB’s monitoring center in Quartino, Switzerland. The platform uses predictive algorithms to identify and anticipate any emerging technical issues. Technical support staff arrive on site fully briefed and equipped with all the parts required to resolve emerging issues – there and then.

“iUPSGuard is like having an ABB UPS expert on site 24-7, ensuring your operations have the continuous, uninterruptible supply of power they need,” says Gianluca Gentile, Global Digital and Service Product Manager at ABB. “ABB experts remotely monitor the hardware around-the-clock, analyzing the data and ensuring any action we take minimizes the time on site. Customers can focus on their operations, leaving it to ABB to identify and assess any potential issues. In healthcare settings, this can avoid unnecessary in-person inspections that can affect the availability of essential medical equipment.”

ABB has assets ranging from 1kVA up to 6 MVA already connected to iUPSGuard. The scalability of the solution makes it suitable for applications ranging from small UPS in inaccessible enclosures in campus security system cameras, to the back-up power for hyperscale, defense and financial data centers that require continuous expert monitoring. Customers receive 24-7 monitoring with instant alerts, regular reports and first-time-fix maintenance.

iUPSGuard communicates with the UPS onsite via SSL encrypted unidirectional connectivity, allowing only outbound information. With no way for external commands or data to enter the UPS, maximum cyber security is assured. Its efficient data transmission supports faster response times and higher system availability.

Users access live data through a secure Android or iOS app or any Internet browser, while ABB’s Remote Monitoring team also analyzes data from each site. By identifying the variations that provide advanced warning of emerging faults, ABB ensures that local experts can schedule site visits, fully equipped with the right information and correct parts.
